Default 1994 civic DX won't start.do I need new distributor kit.

<div style="text-align:right;">Never had a prob with this car.today in rain went to start and wouldn't fire up.the battery is new,the starter is fine.the car turns over but sound like there isn't a spark.what could be my problem.for some reason first thought in my head is the distributor and rotor needs changing.car has 130,000 and it's the original still on there.I really don't know much about cars.also is there a high performance one that I can buy over the counter at local auto parts.? I have made some upgrades and want the most out of the one I purchase if this is the problem.please help with any feedback or suggestions.thanks</div>

You need to do tests before changing parts. Start by turning the key on but don't crank. Watch the check engine light on the dash. It should come on for 2 seconds then go out. During the time it is on, you should hear the fuel pump running under the back seat.

If that test passes, then you would go on to testing for spark. If that test fails, the problem is certainly not the distributor.

The 4.5 things the engine needs to run.

1) Compression/Oxygen

2) Fuel

3) Quality Spark

4) Synchronization aka Timing

4.5) Correctly operating electrical circuits.

If any one of those things is not present, the engine will not run.

Your chore is to figure out which one of those is your culprit. And you do not do this by blindly throwing parts at the car.
