So I have an engine ready to be pulled in my Acura EL besides the axles. Drivers side is ready to be cracked loose but the passenger side is giving me an issue, I went to get the link out of the nut with a punch and the end of it broke off, any ideas on how to get the nut off? I'm stumped. You can see what I'm talking about in the picture.

 

The nut (with threads) doesn't appear to be damaged or stripped so should be able to use a blunt chisel punch or sturdy flathead and bend the flange up and out of the way. Use PB blaster on threads and let it soak for a few hours then spray it again 30 minutes before removing the axle nut. Buy a new axle nut for installation.

I would even guess that it's ready for removal as is because, there doesn't look to be much holding it into that indention and shouldn't strip threads. But, wait for others replies as I could be wrong.

 

since i dont have an impact i use a 1/2 in craftsman rachet and a bigass 6 foot piece of pipe.
i sit my *** on it and bounce the f*cker off lol.

 

I use a torque multiplier to take axel nuts off. I found I don't even have to try and unstake (unbend) them.

What I do have to do is make sure I break them free before doing any other work while the engine still runs. I start teh engine and have someone hold the brakes while I make short work of the nuts.

coupled with a 3/4 drive 32mm socket (1.25 inch socket fits better than the 32mm) makes it possible to pop the most stubborn axle nuts with a simple 36 inch breaker bar and about 50-80 ft-lbs of pressure.

 

But the piece of the punch is kind of digging up into the axle nut, just worried I won't be able to get it off!

 

First off, you don't have to remove axle nuts at all to R&R engine. Take the lower ball joints off and you can swing the knuckles out far enough to get the axles out of the transmission. Then leave the axles in the car.

It looks like as you turn the nut in the loosening direction, it's going to fall out.

 

Use a dremel and cut the nut next to where the chisel bit broke off and it should free up and let the bit fall out
