Timing Belt Tension VIDEO
Belt is not supposed to be high tension tight, just enough to remove the slack.
With crank and cam sprockets aligned, rotate crank 3 teeth to remove slack from between crank and cam.
Loosen acorn nut to allow spring tension to remove residual slack on the waterpump side, springs will not cause tension on the belt, merely removes the slack. With the lower cover off you can see this more readily, but not necessary.
Tighten acorn nut back.
Rotate crank over twice(720°) and place on TDC.
Verify cam sprocket has rotated once(360°), with the 'up' arrow in the up or down position, as long as the back side alignment marks are correct on the head you are golden.
If the car has 100Kmiles on it and the belt has not been replaced, or no records are found. It is overdue.
