replace all synchros, synchro springs, and the 2nd and 5th gears, and I would replace the input shaft bearing and seal while in there

Usually synchro springs and sleeves will cause it to pop out. If you get the sets they come complete with hubs , sleeves and sychros.

A synchronizer does not control fork location, it only controls the quality of the gearshift itself. Bearing wear is the primary cause of gearshifts that do not stay in position. When the bearings wear, the shafts develop slack. Because helical gears allow both radial and axial thrust, the main and countershafts will repel each other, this causes the gears to move away from the slider, causing a release of the gear. The reason the gear can be maintained on occasion is because the gear and collar teeth have a slight boat-tail which allows the gear to maintain position under load only. Read this thread:

The most common reason for a "B" series transmission to pop out of 5th gear is low trans fluid. If everything looks dark inside when you open it up... fluid was the killer. Second gear could be a separate issue or related... no way to know until you crank the case.
