Project car possibilities?
Hey guys, Ive been shopping around for a nice cheap project car to work with. Problem is, up until now, I have not really researched 4gens very much, and to be honest I originally planned to go with a 5gen hatch. What are some of the advantages of a 4 vs. 5 generation hatch, asides from less wieght (I assume)?
Right now I have one possible candidate (a 91 STD hatch), I may go to look at it this weekend...any tips on what to look for, and how much to pay? I dunno, I guess Im looking for a little guidance, to at least help me narrow down what topics to search on here, at this point Im not sure where to start.

I know I will be buying a car (if I go with a 91) that is over 10 years old, and with that there comes certain problems (rust, etc.) I guess the thing I am really trying to determine, is when Im looking to replace many parts for upgrades, what exactly are some of the trouble spots that I would need to avoid?
Just wanted to give this another go, maybe I wasn't too clear about what I was asking, or maybe I just need to look harder at what is in front of me.

rust is a big thing for these cars. also like you said, you are looking at a car that is 11-14 yrs old. there will be more replacement items needed vs a newer car. but the lighter weight can be a huge help...
I have had no issues with my 90 Civic Si. It is absolutly awesome and a blast to drive. Once the little d16a6 gets a buzzin, its cool. If i were you, get an Si. Unless your swapping. but the Si got the all the goods. Any questions just IM on AIM: sitinonthejohnny
ah, here we go...
Well, Im assuming I would swap, so Si vs. lower trims is not too big a deal. So thats what Ive been trying to determine, if the shocks, springs, engine, transmission, and maybe the brakes are all getting tossed for upgrades, is rust really my only enemy? I have no clue when it comes to bodywork, and I don't know exactly what can and can not be fixed, or even how much it would cost? Thanks for the input fellas.

I think rust would have to be the major problem with 4th gen's. Thats all that was really wrong with my car, there were a few minor parts that had to be replaced, and the windshield, but other than that just rust.
Look at the rear quarter panels and the wheelwells, those are usually the worst places, and you might want to have a look at the floor too, just incase its rotten.
