After driving a few miles my CEL comes on the I get code 12. The EGR was cleaned about 5K ago. Upon reading many posts on this forum I went out and disconnected the vacuum line from the EGR solenoid and EGR valve. I then applied suction to the solenoid side of the hose while it was still connected to the EGR valve. The motor died instantly. I am confused as to what this means but I think it means all my ports are open. What do I replace or do next?

I would try disconnecting the battery ground for at least 1 hr or erasing the code with a scanner if you haven't done so yet. Sometimes the code is stored in the pcm and the car will still act up even with the issue being fixed if the code hasn't been cleared. Hope that helps.

 

The code 12 simply means it's not seeing any lift on the egr valve when it tests the system. Either the egr valve is gunked up with carbon and the pintle isn't moving or there is a wiring issue going to the valve itself. This code has nothing to do with the egr ports being blocked.

 

^^^True. Could be an electrical issue then. I would read up on how much voltage, if any is supposed to be applied to that egr valve and also test the plug on the egr valve itself for continuity. You should register almost zero ohms/resistance or as low as possible to a circuit that's working properly as opposed to infinite resistance to an open circuit i believe. You may also wanna take apart the egr valve n clean it with gasoline or any solvent that breaks down carbon easily. I usually do this to my vehicles when cleaning those type of parts. I recommend u dry it up before install and try to add a bit of engine oil(coat it) to any shaft or valve that sees movement up n down, etc, and check that it moves freely without getting stuck before re-installing.
