Default What can we use when OEM distributors are hard to find?

So im in thr process of assembling my engine, still gathering other parts I need. I have picked up an s300 v2 and I have been looking for a distributor and im coming up empty handed. I want OEM, but they are discontinued. Most used I can find are not td44u, and if they are they are not OEM, they are just used autozone junk. Ide really hate to spend 100 bucks on a used distributor, and sink 300 in new oem internals into it. Ide also hate to but a "new" parts store one for 260 bucks and sink 300 in oem parts into it. What are you guys doing for distributors? Seems like there arent many reliable choices out there. Ive come up with 2 real options:

Buy an ebay new td44u for 90 bucks and put new OEM parts in it. I would be in it for about 400 ish.

Or

Ived looked for reviews, found none. I did email them to see if it had a warranty, waiting to here back.

I refuse to use anything other then OEM, parts store dizzyz are notoriously junk.

kinda hard to find as you mentioned, best bet is a used one sometimes you can find heads that come with an OEM dizzy. Only other option is to purchase from Honda/Acura I think they are about $500 brand new. On a used OEM the only parts I would recommend replacing is the igniter/coil.....igniters are so expensive from OEM you may as well just do an igniter bypass. I would not bother with parts store/Ebay I would prefer used OEM over those

The one I currently have came with my ITR head, it worked perfectly but I decided to buy a brand new OEM coil before taking it in to the dyno did not want to run into any issues. I also have a spare one that I was using before that which also worked great.

2kdrift: you pretty much summed up my original post. I know parts stores are junk. Oem is 600 dollars but they are DISCONTINUED so even if I had stupid deep pockets, that's too expensive.

-That's a good idea on calling hmotors. I'll give that a try.

Many of us in the 500whp+ club that stayed with older OEM distributors tend to enhance our systems with using digital ignition systems and convert to external coil. It's not as expensive as a new distributor, and proven to work. Google the Crane/mallory systems.

Lightningteg had the most visual example

Theshodan: Thank you for the title edit. I'm going to do some research on the external coil setup. But I still need an obd1 based distributor for that. So would you go with a cheap ebay unit than run the external coil setup? Or would you maybe run that VMS unit, which can be ordered external coil ready. Im all for oem but used is proving very difficult to find. When I do find one, the seller cannot or wont try to ID it as oem or aftermarket.

I'm still going to try hmotors just didn't get a break in work today.

I'd never run an eBay anything in my cars. I'd rather get a used MSD Distributor before I'd run that nonsense.

I also bought two spare OEM distributors about 6 years ago as part of a parts horde, so I'd never run into this issue. Since I've had my cars for over 20 years I knew availability would get bad someday

You should be able to rebuild / replace everything in the dizzy.

I didnt know what dizzy to use on my car either. I heard good things about the Rich Porter brand units (I think the company is now called Spectra or Specter or something) and gave it a shot. So far so good a year later. Car made 630whp but is at 470whp 95% of the time. Full street car and sees abuse almost daily. I think I paid 150 shipped for the dizzy on Amazon last year. Seemed very well made and has worked great so far. If I recall correctly I think they have a really good warranty on these units as well. I would buy another one of these no doubt. Good luck

Thanks for the info! I'm still going to give hmotors a try today and I'll look into that brand a little more.

i think i might buy a back up dizzy but again my dizzy is more or less bare since i run an external coil and a icm bypass. so my dizzy is just a shell (no pun intended) of its former self.

Will an oem cap and rotor fit the rich porter dizzy? I read a review saying they are different sizes.. Just curious how compatible these are with oem parts.

Yes. The richporter ones come with a spring type rotor its easy to remove and they have the screw hole for a oem rotor and screw on the shaft, i use a bolt instead of the oem screw they tend to get stripped.
