98 EX civic - whining sound at or above 5k rpm
GF needs a car so we went to check out a 98 ex automatic sedan (American trim level of this would be equal to lx?) with a d16y7 engine. The owner let me take it for a spin and everything seemed fine and tight. Upon going wot, it made this odd whine type sound right around 5k and on. Drove a bit more, same sound around 5k and on.
It was wet out and the guy said he used some engine degreaser within the engine bay recently. I've never heard this type of sound in any automatic Honda or Acura I've driven. I asked him if he's ever heard the sound but of course he said no. Hmm?
What do you guys think is causing the sound? Not too familiar with civics.
Thanks

Very hard to say as I can't hear it, where is the sound coming from, engine or transmission?
Is it only under load, not when just revving the engine? 94

Yeah I know it's a crap shoot. It's definitely coming from the engine bay. The only load on the engine first time was fan and radio; second time the Ac and radio were on. Both made the sound in the said rpm range.
Indeed, it is hard to tell without a proper diagnosis. I did check the atf before driving and it was pink and within the proper level. Shifts weren't hard, but not smooth either. I revved it to 2k in neutral after the drive and no hint of the whine. Idle was steady as could be too.
Oh well. Just thought I'd ask you guys to see if this is a known problem.

Cuz you gonna need it more than I do.
I'm quite aware it doesn't. I was including more detail because details are required here instead of a vague " car make sound, help me" type post.

Because the guy was right there. Decided to keep looking for something else. Guy was asking too much anyway and wouldn't budge on his price. You can delete this thread Ron, or whatever mod sees this.
