Default 1997 Civic key lock problems

I just got my first honda, its a 97 civic dx coupe. The weird thing is the locks on the car. The ignition, trunk lock, trunk release lever lock, and rear seat fold down lock all work with the key in one way and both door locks open with the same key just flipped upside down. What could the problem be? By the way the key is not the original honda key that came from the dealer, it is a "copy". Also all locks are original. Also is there any way to make my driver side door lock without having to pull on the handle?

So the key doesn't work if inserted one way vs. the other? They should be symmetrical. Get a new OEM Honda key cut by the dealer if it's a problem, and all locks are original.

Inside driver door only locks when you pull the handle if the door is open. It's a feature. To prevent you from locking your keys inside.

Valid piggyback question

If the dealer performed the ignition recall and put in a new ignition key and assembly would they have both keys on file to make duplicates, or could they only duplicate the original for my doors.

My last few hondas always have separate ignition and door keys, it's annoying. The ignition key is always honda official, doors are always the typical walmart or Lowes copy keys

^^ They cheap out, and don't key the new ign the same as the door. No clue if they keep both on file, wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

On our older cars (pre laser-cut keys), this is easy to fix: Replace the little tumbler key thingies (forget the proper name) inside the ignition to match the door ones (you have to pull them out to match them up, and you'll need some spares from a junker, but it's a straightforward process). If you want a brand new OEM Honda key cut to replace the Walmart POS, go to the dealer. It's really really cheap to do.

I think u may be right. I spoke to the previous owner and he said who he bought it from said the issue was because of a incorrectly made spare key.

The notches on both sides of the key are supposed to be identical so that the key works either way you put it in the lock. If the key works one way but not when you turn it upside down, it is a poorly made key.

thank you all very much. I went to a locksmith told him the key was made correctly and that both side are suppose to be symmetrical and he made me the key for 10$
