Default '97 Accord Rough idle, Stalling, Rich Smell- SOLVED!!!

EDIT: I heard that my problems might stem from spark plugs, so i checked them while the car was running. It turns out the 2nd and 3rd plug wires were switched. I feel like a ******* idiot. thanks anyway guys

Hey all,

I'm at my wits end. Let me start by saying i have a 97 Accord w/ a 2.2L SOHC 4-cyl and automatic trans. everything on and in the car is stock besides the deck. I replaced my starter today because it started sticking a few days ago. I unplugged the wire harness and took off the air intake for room to work. when i replaced the unit, i plugged everything back in and re-set the intake. when turned it over, it felt rough, then when it warmed up, the rpm's dropped (around 500 and under). that's when i noticed the really rich gas smell, it seems like its choking, from lack of air? i revved it a bit, and noticed hesitation (ie. it dips a little before revving), a backfire, and i let off the gas. it then died completely. I have been scouring forums and haven't seen anyone with the same symptoms, or at least the haven't been as thorough. It should be noted that i have not received a CEL from my car.

Thanks in advance

I have the same issue going on with my 95 accord SOHC VTEC auto trans except the whole dying issue.

Was there any recent work done? Several publications show the wrong firing order for F22B1 engines.
Have you checked for any stored codes? (two wire blue connector under glovebox door, pull down, jumper with wire, turn ignition to II(ON) and count CEL blinks)
Was this a sudden change or has the car become progressively worse?

It was running too rich so i blocked off the vaccum line to the air/fuel solenoid and ran it like that for a lil while than I plugged it back in so i could trick the ecu to resetting itself

Dont have any codes or check engine light on. There are other possibilities
1. Air idle control valve
2. Fast idle thermo valve (located uder ther throttle body)
3. Intake not sucking enough air
4. Exhaust system not creating enough back pressure
