JDM H22A engine balance belt seized and stripped causing engine failure
has this happened to anyone else? I've heard of timing belts going but not so much about just the balance belt. I pulled engine and swapped for now, but not sure what has happened to the h22a, I pulled timing cover all off and see the balance belt has most teeth stripped off . When it happened I was out of town in the mountains and engine ended up stalling out and sounded like a jackhammer under hood 😞 Just looking for any input what may have happened
The only way this can happen is if something the balance belt rides on siezed up, so either the front or rear balance shaft. It doesn't sound possible that the crank seized up.
I wonder if the crank broke, or a bearing spun and seized, but the balance shafts tried to spin more and stripped the belt? In any case, a teardown of the engine will tell.
rotate the crank, see if you can feel anything knock inside the engine, same w/ rotate the cam shafts .. put a long ratchet extension in the spark holes and ensure it's riding up and down in each cylinder ... that'll get you close.
