Ok I've got out all the trim except for the AC controls. I popped off the hazard and defroster buttons and took out the screws behind them. I can get the top part of the unit out but the bottom feels stuck. It looks like the hot/cold slider control mechanism won't let me pull it out. Do I just yank or is there something else to undo?
You need to disconnect the temperature slider cable underneath. It's in the middle on the passenger side right up under the dash, near the back of the radio. Not too hard to reach. Pull it out of the clip and slide it off the peg.
