So I have never built a turbo car but I have done a lot of reading over my years here on HT. The build is my 1997 Honda Civic Lx. I plan to do some AutoX and hopefully some lap racing up north or anywhere close for that matter.

Done As of today 7/16/2016.....
Purchased and have All of my parts for the turbo portion of the build.
Wheels and Tires im pretty satisfied with as I have two sets.
Suspension: D2 Lowering Springs on Lowtek Struts; Lowered approx. 2 inches all around.
Interior: Still Giving it my own touches. Currently have GSR cloth seats installed.
Fenders Cut and Rolled to Fit my 15x8 +25 Vordoven Wheels




So my plan.....
Remove engine
replace clutch kit Also had a grinding noise in gear slightly.
Replace valve stems- Car would smoke sometimes during 1st start after sitting for a day or any long perioid of time. More so in warm weather.
Replace all gaskets
T-belt/Water Pump
Oil Pump
Rear Disc Conversion
Power Steering Leak-Replace Rack n Pinion
Mount Intercooler Piping
Tune
Coilovers in the rear Maybe*
Body Work and Paint- Absolute Last thing I do to the car.
Day 1 of my Teardown
Installed my Used Walboro 255lph Fuel pump



Removed the Exhaust so I could pull the engine but first test fit and see if anything needs to be kept off once it comes out...My son wants to help


SO nothing major needs to change not even A/C but I will order a slim fan to save a few inches of clearance. And decided to order a radiator and fan combo for the coolant side.

After Doing that it was time to pull the engine....Picked up the Cherry Picker from ebay too! lol



Engine needs to be disassembled so the head can go out to be decked for the new head gasket.



Next up is the Oil Pump, Oil Pan getting tapped, and I mocked up my turbo manifold with the downpipe and some of the block had to be cut so that happened as well.

 

Got some ARP's off ebay as well



And here is the spec for the Turbo:
Turbo Specification:
-Inlet Diameter: 3"
-Outlet Diameter: 2"
-Oil Inlet: 1/8 NPT
-Compressor Wheel: .57 Trim
-A/R Compressor: .50 A/R

Turbine wheel:
-Exducer: 2.48"

-Mayor: 2.36"



This is the Kit I ordered. The customer service is great. I emailed them because the first turbo they sent me I could only get 1-2 of the manifold bolts to screw in the were too close to the casting on the turbo. They sent a new one. No problems at all.

Planning on keeping the eBay turbo? Some of the guys I work with said eBay turbo's are garbage, but that everything else in the kit is okay. Anyone else heard anything about it? Looks good though. I'm planning on B20 swapping my civic with an eBay turbo kit.

 

ebay turbo arent made well, just to be honest.

 

hope you take this time to swap the intake manifold over to a automatic y8 intake and tb. for fueling look at bosch 530-630cc injectors they can be had for 200 and some times lower on ebay but get the ev14 style. good luck make sure you run a small restirctor in the oil line.

 

Agreed - Ebay kits are nothing but headaches. The manifolds are weak, wastegates are unreliable, turbos are junk, etc... the only pieces somewhat worth using are the IC piping and their cheap intercoolers (which aren't very effecient)

 

So on my crankpulley I think i may have lost the "lock key" small metal square in the notch? Anyone have an extra il pay postage and since im in no rush it saves me a trip to the junk yard. There was one on the crank sprocket and that on is still there. But im pretty sure there was one on the crank pulley when i took it off, and now its lost lol

Next update ill put up pics of the engine assembly.

 

Ah, those are known as a "woodruff" key. 99% of those with a crankshaft keep their keys with each crank. You'll more than likely have to order from an online OEM source like Majestic Honda for that key.

 

Its called a Woodruff Key and it sits in the Keyway, in case you want to search for those terms. I haven't had to buy one in a while, but check with NAPA or something local - they might just have one

 

What do you think about those lotek struts?

 

Honestly, there's cheap, and then there's "dangerously" cheap. From what I've been seeing about these particular shocks, they simply come with a shorter shock body than the rest of them, on eBay at a lower price. I don't necessarily think they are horrible, but I'd be very leary about putting my life in that company's hands.. Sorry, but the cheap price is not worth my life.

I would honestly stick with the KYB GR2, pay a little extra, and never worry about them again.

 

Ive been riding on them 1 year and roughly 8k miles.....and I like them. I have very little body roll compared to before I installed them, and they ride nicely on the highway! (high speed small bumps) in the city they are fine as well. They have been well worth the money IMO.

If it's one thing I have learned over the year it's that ''turbo'' and the word ''cheap'' doesn't belong together in the same sentence. There's nothing cheap about putting a turbo setup on a Honda and making it right.

Painting and cleaning action today. I'm looking into plugging the y8's holes at the iacv with some rubber grommets.



Any recommendations on anything I can get from a hardware store or something?

 

I think anyone that's been on the forums past 5 days will have heard that one before lol but I agree....I've read a lot of horror stories on here.

 

Why do you wanna plug the iacv ports?

Update:
Slow progress. I'm waiting on the woodruff key to come in the mail. Chilling until then but figured id so something today.



Installed Aluminum 2 row performance Radiator w/ Slim Fan for the coolant side, and a slim A/C fan wired up and ready to go back in the car. The turbo track car is almost ready. Everyday I try to get something done. Tomorrow I'm planning to have the rear trailing arm bushings out. And new bushings in. Then another day will be for putting them on the car.

And I've been in Welding Fundamentals class. Never welded before. I've learned a lot and plan on taking an Intermediate class next. Here's what I made on the last day:


Plasma Cut out of a 1/4" steel plate and then stick welded the plates on. I took it home and spray painted it ��

 

More slow progress plus some rain.....
Still need to block off the IACV on the Y8 intake mani, I also lost the 2 bolt flange for my oil feed on the turbo. I think i may have shipped it when i returned the previous turbo. So a trip to Autozone for that. Then i'll throw the motor in and start hooking up my new vac lines and so forth.

 

The IACV is located on the throttle body and not the back of the intake manifold. Since im using my Y8 throttle body where the IACV is in a different location.

I used my IACV to outline a piece of metal and then cut it out, cleaned it up and made bolt holes. Worked perfect for a block off plate with the stock gasket. This was on a K series though
