Default intermittent directionals

so i wanna start this off by saying its not my bike! my buddy just bought his ol lady an 04 600 f4i, he said just a few days ago that her directionals worked as intended through normal use, tonight they only work when the hand/foot brakes are depressed. any idea what could be causing it? thanks in advance
