97 accord rear brake shoe pad replacement suggestion
Hi,
My rear brake shoe pad, the front piece(No. 10 in the attached picture) needs to be replaced. The rear piece looks fine. Can I just replace the front (#10)? Or I need to purchase the show set(# 5) and replace both?
Thanks a lot.

I believe the common practice is to always replace them in a set of either 2 front wheels, 2 rear wheels, or all 4 wheels at the same time. I have never heard of or even consider replacing just 1 side of brake pad.
Not just replace one side, need to replace both sides.
Replace just one piece (# 10) not the set (#5).
P.S. Thanks celicool. As DCFIVER, MIKE and holmesnmanny suggested, I will purchase the set (#5) and replace them all.

You replace the shoes in pairs. Both sides. You will also have to replace 13/14 as those will surely leak after installing new shoes. While that's all apart, clean self adjuster 21;20/26;19/25 verify the star piece is not worn(20/26) or that the ratcheting mechanism(23/29) is not worn/broken. Replace those as need be. Verify the backing plate(6/7) does not have grooves on the 6 pads where the shoes ride on. If a groove is present on it, you will either need to file it flat/smooth, use a pad insert, or purchase new backing plates. A groove will prevent the shoe from moving out.
IMO when you are in there it is just easier/cheaper to replace all wear items, save for the backing plate, parking brake pawl arm, and drum. Just clean those parts, grease the new, gross adjust the self adjuster, bleed the brakes and be off.

It sounds like they didn't use any grease on the adjuster. Make sure to put brake grease on ALL moving parts or parts that come into contact with something that moves, aside from contact area on the shoes themselves(obviously). It might be wise to just get new brake shoe hardware and reverse set.
This brake spring tool will be THEE tool you will need to remove the upper spring. It can help save you from damaging the brake cylinders. Just grab the spring with that tool after tightening the tool down onto the spring and then just manhandle it off.

Then this is the best brake grease you can get.
