97 civic turbo build with b18a1
hey everyone bare with me here as I am very new to turbocharging a vehicle and this is my first build I have ever done with forced induction. I have some quick questions for all you experienced turbo'ed civics. so I am getting close to the end of the build and the only thing that is troubling me is the tuning. I am going to send my p75 ecu in to phearable.net to get a basemap which I've heard is a good company to go with. when I send the ecu in I have to give them a detailed description of my build and then I have the option of having and o2 sensor or not. which is mostly the problem I have run into. the o2 sensor before the build was no good so I do not have a working o2 sensor.. do I have to have a working o2 sensor when I take the car to get tuned?? or do I have to buy a wideband? can I get the car tuned without either?, or can I just hold off until after the tune? and also do I have the basemap with and o2 or no?
thank you
for your time and any help is appreciated!!

Most tuning facilities that are reputable have a wideband that they hook up, so you need at least the O2 Bung welded in.
It is a matter of debate as to whether or not to have the actual wideband gauge and sensor in the car at all times at the time of tuning. I'm of the older veterans that do not, and haven't had a wideband in the car for over 20 years. That's my tuner's job. To "know what's going on" I am also one to use an EGT gauge vs. "Checking plugs" after every "pull" which my tuner and I have never done. So, some methods are different and of a standard, others are not.
Do I think after 20 years that you personally need a wideband in the car when it's only needed for the tuner? NO, especially if you don't plan on tuning yourself, it's just one more gauge to worry about if you don't understand the numbers and what they mean when it's important.
Do you need a wideband for tuning? ABSOLUTELY... Your shop will either provide one, or as stated if you feel you need one on a permanent basis, you'll have it hooked up already.

Do not bother with an OEM Narrow band sensor in either case, we're only talking about wideband sensors here.
Now, the mudslinging will begin. This should go to the Engine management forum, so I'll have the moderators move this appropriately.
Good luck.
P.S. Please do us a favor and add a location to your profile so we have an idea at least if you're in the U.S. or some other country. That way we have an idea as to what is available in your area. We don't know you or where you're from, but it is important for resources and tips.

I agree with TheShodan's post above - i've never run a wideband in my car. I trust my tuner and let him take care of that, but then again, i never plan to tune my own car
