Default D16 turbo size

Does anyone know if a t3/t4 .57/.63 turbo would be too much for a d16y8? Would it be too laggy? Thanks

That depends on a couple of factors

1. What is your power goal?
2. Is the engine built/ stock?
3. What is your use for the car?
4. Which manifold/ exhaust are you using?

If the engine is stock, that turbo is overkill. Stock D's will make about 240whp before they throw a rod, so using a turbo that can make 450whp is pointless.

We need some details if you really want a decent answer...

Yeah that basically answers my question. The car is stock. It will be a daily driver. 200-220hp would be fine with me. It will be tuned when finished and all. I've never had a boosted single can before so I was jw. But basically that turbo will be useless for me?

Yes.. much much too large. You need to step down to just over 35-40lbs/min .. a 50 "trim" is about 46lbs/min. Much too large

It will work, but there are better options available for your power goals.

T-Series T3/T4E .58 45 trim, 350HP : atpturbo.com

Garrett Turbo charger, T-Series T3 60 Trim : atpturbo.com

Its more complicated than that - these turbos are T3 frame, not T3/T04. The pictures may not do them justice, but they are noticeably smaller than the 57 trim you had asked about (which is a t3/t04e). Simply putting a .48ar housing on that 57 trim isn't going to make it the same as the smaller T3 turbos listed above.

Another common option that people have used is the T3 .42/.48 but i had a tough time sourcing any of them new - might have to browse the classifieds or craigslist for one of those.

Also, if you dont have a manifold yet, you could also look into the Mitsu lines that use the goofy turbine flange 15g, 16g , 19t, 20g, etc...

Yeah I've got a manifold, just a t3 t4 cast log manifold to keep ac. I got this turbo on a good deal but after some research on seeing it wouldn't be beneficial to me really. I don't want to have to be in full throttle all the time to even peak into boost

The "old" T3 60 trim or Turbonetics T3 Super 60 is a good match.

Since you already have a T3 flanged log manifold that eliminates some of the Mitsubishi turbo family as Schister66 said - The TD04H 16T and 19T off some OE Volvo's and Saab's pack a punch and offer great spool though.

You could even go "old school" and use a T25 from an eclipse and get that power and lots of toque.

He already has a T3 flanged manifold, so without using a different one or a conversion flange, he can't run a T25 (14b) flanged turbo. The Mitsu line isn't compatible

Everybody knows disco is daddy when it comes to D's...see if you can grab a new/used GT28r or 28rs for a decent price since the GTX line is out(which are awesome but for your goals they're expensive/overkill).

They're expensive, but is a very good turbo AND comes in a T3 variant.

From what I researched.. The turbonetics super 60 flows better than the garrett. I think its got a re-worked cover. Butis easier to find.

The garrett has spiked in price over the years for some reason.
