Turbo Kit
hey i have a 99 ex civic with a d16y8 engine the ONLY turbo kit i was able to find was the drag gen 3 for about 3000 i was wondering if there are any other ones that would fit my car thanks, also if anyone has expierence with drag gen 3 exactly how good is it
I dont agree with the swap theory...think about this...you can find that Greddy turbo kit for 1500 bucks, and then you can walk on a car with just a B16 swap. And youll have some torque!!! I just cant imagine that the B16 is much better than my turbo y7

you aint gonna find a greddy kit for 1500$
if you do, its not gonna make enough power to "walk a b16"
and for 3000$ you could get a b18c and have torque.
For a basic greddy kit = $1500 shipped or even cheaper
but you also need BOV, Intercooler, injectors, clutch + more and more to run higher boost. How much money r you gonna spend?

The drag kit is pretty good, except for a few things. They come with in in-line fuel pump in which the directions say to install in the engine compartment after the fuel filter. Big no-no, if something were to happen (which it has and drag has been sued on it) like the fuel pump lines leaking, 1 spark can set your car on fire and there would be nothing you could do but watch it burn. It almost happened to me and i've heard of it happenening to others. You'd want to get a walboro 255lph in-tank fuel pump, You'll be much better off. It costs about $100. Another thing I didnt like about the drag kit is the directions. They are VERY basic and are meant for professional mechanics. I am not a professional mechanic but i have mechanic experience because I work on aircraft in the military. This install took me just about 4 days because of lack of directions, and missing parts from the kit. I hear Greddy kits come with great instructions and just about everything you'd need for a good install.
You wont save that much money doing a swap. Chances are you'll probably spend more money. A complete b16a2 (99-00 si) with hydro tranny and all the goodies will run for $2500+ from any reputable company. Then you need motor mounts $500, change all belts/gaskets/fluids another $100+. Or you can settle for some jdm motor which they claim less than 30k which was beat the hell up. Plus you dont even know how much actual mileage it has because they dont come with an odometer. I've heard horror stories about jdm engines coming in all banged up, seized, etc. With my drag gen III on my d16y8 engine 6lbs of boost (for right now until i get my in-tank fuel pump and better injectors) i can walk on any stock b16 swap. If your talking a b16 with turbo then your gonna be looking at a nice $6k+.
Well the way I see it is how much more money are you willing to spend on your car. For example, I also have a D16Y8 and I'm going turbo because I don't plan on spending more than $2000 on my car I have student loans to payoff soon. I just figured with my budget I would gain most with the turbo. But if you have a lot of cash to burn, definitely get a swap and then build on that.
Greddy turbo kit=$1450 all day long. Non intercooled it will walk a B16 with ease. Why does this swap BS pop up in everythread. He didnt ask if he should swap or not
.
But Greddy, Apex-i, Drag III, And I believe Rev-Hard all make turbo kits for your motor. As long as its for a D16 it'll work.

Don't turbo that motor.
Swap instead of turbo.
Trust me, it's much better.
A d-series is not a powerful motor.
Swap a b16a and turbo that.

yeah the turboed singlecam will whoop up on a b16 powered civic with minor mods. greddy kit new 1450..get it used for 1100, starion intercooler 150, mod piping 50. BOV 150..bam...low to mid 14 second times on street tires. I know..i did it with a clutch so bad i had to let off 5 times in the quarter to let the clutch catch up with the motor..
plus...d16 longblocks are 2-300 bux

right..plenty of room for error...which means that it is PERFECT for a 1st kit or something. I know of countless times when some boy has turboed his 2001 GSR ans blew it up running 12 lbs on a stock drag kit. Blow up a couble single cams. then buy the badass setup down the road. Thast what i am doing (thought my single cam didn't blow up)
I did run about 12 lbs the ist night i had it(no boost guage) Felt strong as hell lol. I would just punch it in 2nd ans it would light them up like hell

I can get Drag kits complete for $2700. Turbonetics turbo, intercooler, Chrome intercooler piping, Blitz DD BOV, deltagate, Vorthech FMU etc. If anyone is interested let me know and I can get em for most apps, price might vary. $2700 for a drag kit you cant lose.

All motor is great. I love it. But face it.......Turbo looks better, soundsbetter, runs better, and it is still faster! (of course, this is a generalization. We all know of an all motor car car beat a turbo car depending on the setups. Basically, bang for the buck is better with boost)
