1997 accord engine swap general questions
Hello, i recently acquired a 1997 honda accord all stock with f22? engine, long story short i was doing a compression test, and mistakenly left an adapter behind, went to screw in my spark plug it seemed to thread okay but when tightened it got jammed and shattered the porcelain, and a few small pieces got in the cylinder. Well i vacuumed it out as best i could, put a new plug in and fired it up, rattled for a few seconds and seemed fine after that, i figured it had passed threw the exhaust valve. Anyway after driving it i noticed some smoke on a hard acceleration, then over the next few weeks it got worse to the point i was burning a quart every 20-30 miles, it still runs half decent though so ive been driving it and topping it off. I ordered an identical JDM engine with f22b stamped, it looks pretty good, and i'm aware the emissions are different so some parts will need changed, the website specified the oil pump but im not sure what else ill need to complete the swap and make it legal to drive (i live in an emissions county) i know i need to use my throttle body cause the jdm is from an automatic what else would you guys suggest i do to ensure a successful swap? also will i need to remove the gearbox and engine as an assembly? id rather not disconnect the shift linkages and all that, or is that pretty standard when doing a clutch anyway? never did a fwd car before. thank you all in advance for any input.
Did you get the same F22B that you currently have in your car? VTEC or Non VTEC.
JDM engines are not coded the exact same as USDM engines. They only use 4 digits, their F22B code is used for both VTEC and Non VTEC engines, while in the US they use 6, F22B1 = VTEC and F22B2 = Non VTEC.
You need to keep the following parts from your existing engine;
• Complete intake manifold (w/throttle body) and exhaust manifold.
• Distributor
• Crankshaft Timing belt gear
• Crankshaft Balance shaft belt gear
• TDC and CKP sensors mounted to the oil pump
• Complete oil pump housing
I find it easier to pull the engine and trans as a complete unit. This is just my personal opinion though. I think by the time you loosen everything off to make the room to separate the engine from the trans, you could have just pulled them both.

thank you for the response, the engine is non-vtec, and i figured it would be necessary, i have to swap the clutch and flywheel over anyway. and just curious to whats different in the crankshaft timing belt gears between the jdm and usdm? i haven't started taking anything apart yet, I'm just hoping i can get it right the first time.
