My 1993 Honda DelSol started making a knocking noise. Its a d16z6 manual No a/c.

I thought the noise was coming from the lower end and could be a rod knock but upon further inspection I notice that the noise went away when I took off my power steering and alternator belt.

I put my alternator belt back on and the noise still was gone Next I put my power steering belt back on and started the car then the noise was back.

Soo i'm assuming it has to be my power steering pump/pully or rack. Have any of you heard a knocking coming from the p/s and what was it.

Also can I delete my power steering or will that cause more problems in the future thanks.

 

Good troubleshooting.

Does the knocking occur even without turning the wheel?

With PS belt off, do you hear/feel the noise when turning the PS pulley by hand?

 

Yes it does knock when its stationary and when its moving. That makes me belive its the bearing on the pump.

On the other note with the belt off I cant hear the noise when I spin the pulley.

Im not sure if that means I can eleiminate the bearing or I cant get it up to speed to make it knock.

 

Make sure the pump mount bolts aren't loose. Also check for a loose bracket.

Any noticeable play in the pulley?

All the bolts are tight on the pump and bracket.
Could it be coming from the rack? My car is pretty loud so its hard to pinpoint what with the power steering is making the noice.

 

Engine stethoscope should help.

I actually do have a stethoscope but i cant hear anything over the regular engine noise.
