Default High warm idle on 88 LX...

Hey yall. My girlfriend has an 88 Accord LX. When you first fire it up in the morning, or first time driving after it's cooled off, the idle stays at about 2500. Then, you tap the gas and it drops to 2000. Which is normal for warmup, but sometimes it will stay that high even after it's warmed up! You can drive around for 10 minutes and the needle is at normal operating temperature, but the revs don't drop. This only happens once in awhile and I was thinking maybe a butterfly on the carb gets stuck. I've barely done any work on this engine(used to be my car and never had any problems). SO let me know if any of you have had to deal with this prob, thanks. And if any of you have the stock axle back or just muffler for cheap for this car, IM me

Yeah, definitely sounds like the choke is hanging. Check all the linkage for binding and try hosing it down with carb cleaner. Make sure the choke butterfly isn't "wedging" in the air horn due to a build up of carbon or varnish.

Is it an automatic or five speed?

it's a 5 speed, so when she shifts, it will start to rev on her. Also, it sucks cause if you need to shut it off ad it's still idling super high, well, I don't like to shut a car off when it's idling above 2 grand

Thanks, I'll check that out later! I've rebuilt the carb on my truck before I built an engine, but never had to try and diagnose something. I figured it was the choke, but there's so much crap back there I don't really know what I'm mesing with

Been awhile since I had a carbureted vehicle with a "functional" choke but from what you describe the choke isn't sticking all the way shut or you would be having a lot of black smoke and rough running. It is evidently just sticking at the point where the fast idle linkage isn't disengaging. Probably where the butterfly is closed about a third to halfway. Sometimes it doesn't take much to cause that either.
