possible clutch damage after stolen vehicle recovered.
Ok, so my 94accord lx 5 speed coupe got stolen earlier this week. The police caught the guy driving it 2 days later. When I tried to put it into gear after having to jump start it (thief swapped the battery out with a wheelchair battery. It will run most the systems in the car, not recommended) it was like there was no 1st gear. It didnt grind, didn't pop out and no resistance. After a few tries I did get it in geer and had no trouble shifting on the trip home. The RPMs seemed to be running high for the speed I was going, but the speedometer quit and i haven't had a chance to resolder the leads so I have no real way of telling for sure if the rpms were high. I haven't driven it since and my floor jack and ramps were in the trunk when she was stolen so I haven't been able to get under the car and have a close inspection. I'm expecting to be repairing damage and finding shoddy worn parts swapped to sell the good ones ( hence the wheelchair battery) but there was nothing wrong with the clutch before the theft. Can he really do that much damage to the clutch in two days? The car had about the same amount of fuel as when I parked it before it was stolen so it wasn't driven very much. Could be the clutch cable but I didn't see any signs that it was leaking. Any thoughts? I can repair just about anything that can go wrong with a car but the inner workings of a transmission are not something I'm well versed on and I've never had to replace a clutch before since I'm usually ready for a new car before the clutch starts showing signs of wear. Could the problem I wss having with putting it in first been something else? I know, not that much to go on, but I'm not looking for the solution at this point, more like looking for where to start. I'm not in the habbit of starting repairs prematurely, i prefer to take the time to figgure out whats wrong first so please don't suggest I replace anything without explanation, I hate people who do that.
