Default Failed emissions.

Took my crx in to get safter and emissions in and it failed horribly. For hc the max I can have I'd 220 and my crx had 608. For the co the max I can have is 1.2 and my crx had 5.4. I've never had a car fail emissions. Can somebody help me? I bought a new cat yesturday but I don't know if that would be enough to bring emissions down that much? The car is also getting poor gas mileage at around 28 mpg. I know the crx should be getting more around 40 or 45.

I don't know were you live, but in my state, any car over 25yrs old, does not need to be emissions tested any more.

My first guess id o2 sensor
And tuneup

Drive around a while first, because the ecu needs to calibrate.
smog techs dont tell you this.
Likely you will faiil if you go back right away after a repair

Post the entire emissions sheet.

The very high O2 levels under both conditions indicate that an exhaust leak is causing the engine to run rich.

Can an exhaust leak really cause high hc and co? I have a new muffler on there but theres a few small holes I temporarily patche'd with this metal tape I had. Is it not my cat or o2 sensor?

Absolutely. Read about how your O2 sensor works.

An exhaust leak falsely tells the ECU that the engine is running lean, causing the ECU to compensate by increasing fuel to the cylinders.

So this means I have an exhaust leak in my header or what? I mean I haven't found any holes above the cat but haven't checked the header yet. I know that if I were to have an exhaust leak above the o2 sensor then I'd have a problem but the o2 sensor is in the middle of the header

Carefully check the header for cracks. Also check header gasket and the bung for the O2 sensor in the header.

So if I find a crack or something, that'll fix my emissions problem?

What you need to know is that an exhaust leak around the O2 sensor in the header WOULD cause the engine to run rich.

It could also be a bad injector or just need a tune up.

Alright. Would a bad catalytic converter not be a problem? How would I know if its a bad injector?

Don't ignore the incredibly high O2 levels. Any theory about the emissions problem must explain that.

Ya I'm not sure it can be a bad injector because the engine doesn't misfire and runs really well. I will check the header for cracks or a bad gasket this afternoon. That would be why I have such high o2 correct?

Exactly

That's the possibility you should focus on first.

Alright thank you! The possibilities are a blown header gasket or a crack/hole in header?

If there was an exhaust leak somewhere around my header, wouldn't i hear it? It would be really loud wouldn't it?

You would smell it.

I dont think it's an exhaust leak

These cars don't have filters for the cabin so you would know

Did you inspect the header and its gasket?

It's the entry of air into the exhaust not the escape of exhaust into the air that causes the problem.

Read about the Venturi effect.

Oh, well yea you should listen to Ron
That makes more sense.

Can a vacuum leak cause rich conditions?
Or is that lean?

Could this crack between the manifold anddown pipe be the cause? It is about an inch under the o2 sensor. The other side has no crack at all<br/>
