Has my head checked over from a local guy. Pressure checked, straight check, valve job, new intake valves installed and port work.. Reputable guy, charged me $600 for everything. Not exactly happy with the port work, Kinda sloppy looking and definitely not polished. Here's a pic of the exhaust side where he cut the valve guides to be flush with the casting.. Seems legit but I've never seen it or heard of it being done. Should it be OK?

Bruh, im not a 100% expert, but im pretty sure that guy just completely ruined your head!? The "port work" im astounded by. ive seen some "dimpling" golf ball style porting but thats not what im seeing here, yours just looks, Ruined? And again, not an expert but the valve guide being chunked off like that- is just poor, poor work.

I think he was drunk when he did it.. I'm gonna have to tear it down and get it re done I think. I don't dare to run it how it is.

 

Looks like he ported them with stones . . . old school way of doing things on IRON heads, not aluminum.

Looks too sloppy for a standard carbide burr unless it was missing all but one of the teeth.

Sorry you got taken on the head . . . it's far from junk though. Looks like it wasn't opened up at all, he just roughed up the surface.

Unless a port has a hole going into a water jacket, it's usually salvageable.

 

yeah that definitely is one of the worse port jobs I've seen, but as said above, it's not completely junked, because it really doesn't look like it was enlarged at all.

a PROPER port job can cure that quite nicely. but learn from this, NEVER let that guy port anything for you ever again lol.

also, chopping the guides is usually worse than leaving them untouched. the port shapes are already designed to flow properly with the guides protruding into the port via the inner radius and the buldge behind the guide. by chopping them you're also losing some support of the valve, allowing the valve to have a little more end play even with the same clearances as uncut

 

Thanks guys you've said enough! Definitely only scraped the surface and used some sort of old school rock method.. Gonna tear it down and get it cleaned up then throw some new supertech guides in it. Thanks again for your input!!!

 

Agreed on replacing the guides. That's what keeps the valve stable. Shortening them can lead to prematurely worn seats and guides. The "potential" cfm increase isn't worth it IMO.
He didn't take too much material off by the looks of it. I think you'll be ok having it ported correctly, not just hogged out and all choppy as Hell.
Find a reputable company. Its already a great flowing head in stock form. Good luck!
