Default hybrid D series tranny questions

ive read numerous articles on the hybrid ZC tranny where you use an SI final drive in a ZC case with ZC 1-5 gears. however, if you do this, you will have to get 90-93 teg axles and intermediate shaft, as well as different hubs. i would rather not do all of that. so my questions are, is it possible to use an SI case, SI internals, and an SI final drive with ZC 1-5 gears?

Yes, at this point you could pretty much do whatever you want, Si case, ZC case. You just have to use the Si differential , and make sure that everything is shimmed properly.

ah crap, well scratch that idea, the final drive i was going to use was off of a 90 EX tranny. i thought they had the same tranny as the SI, turns out, the final drive in the EX is 3.88, same as the DX, not 4.25 like the SI. from what ive just read:

88-91 civic DX, crx DX, EX have the same trannys
88-91 civic SI, crx SI have the same trannys
88-91 civic LX, crx HF have the same trannys

i have done the following:
- zc 1-5 gears, si final drive, zc diff in zc case
- zc 1-5 gears, si final drive, zc diff in si case
- zc 1-5 gears, si final drive, quaife civic LSD in si case

from what i have seen, the zc and si tranny cases are the same.

if you have any specific questions let me know. i do not know if the 4 speed internals will work, but if you can have both trannies apart at the same time, just compare parts.

i don't think the zc diff will fit the 88 si case - i have tried it & zc bearings are larger

well the zc diff fit in my 89 civic si case. from what i have seen and read, the 88-89 si case uses the larger, 40mm/80mm differential bearing. the 90-91 cases all use the 35mm(?)/72mm differential bearing.

if your "88 si" case had the 72mm diff bearing opening, it might not have been an si case...

This is why people who rice out civics are made fun of, they do everything to make there car look good but when it comes time to make it move you get all princessed-out. Try getting grease under your fingers for a change
bottom line, you have no clue what the **** youre talking about. you automatically assume my car is rice from my post? you are a ****** moron. youve never even seen my car, it looks completely stock you jackass. stupid ***** like you give honda owners a bad name because of your ignorant **** talking. and believe me, ive got more honda experience under my greasy fingers than you will ever have.

I currently am building a trans for my d16z6 swap. The zc and si cases ARE the same expect the zc has larger openings for the larger splined axles. I am going to put my old si ('91) countershaft and ring gear on the zc trans to give it overall short gearing. I haven't recieved my axles from the shop yet, but to the best of my knowledge, the spline on the hub side should be the same size. HTH

I just got a 90-91 SI tranny, and to my surprize it does have the smaller bearings.

I always heard before that 89-91 SI cases all have big bearings, 88's have smaller ones, so that tranny was a big confusion. Now breaka_1_9's info puts it all into it's place.

So: will I be able to just swap SI bearings onto the ZC diff in order to fit it into the SI tranny case?

just to clear things up a bit, i got this IM from jlicrx:

(3:35 PM 11/10/2002) jlicrx: zc/si hybrid - you are right - i rechecked the si tranny that we took the final drive out of and it is definitely not 88 - it has the 20 spline input shaft - checking back, according to the guy we bought it from, it is a 91. sorry for the mix-up.

the ZC diff won't allow your Si bearings to fit onto it. the ZC diff has an 40mm diameter "shaft" on each end that receives the axles. the Si diff has a 35mm (i think its 35mm, but i know for certain it less than 40mm) diameter "shaft" that receives the axles.

i am not sure if there is a bearing out there that is a 40mm ID and 72mm OD. that is what you need for the ZC diff to work in your 90-91 si tranny.
