Default power steering pump

When I bought my 2001 accord it was wrecked in the front. The top was broken off the power steering pump reservoir. I replaced the reservoir and the hose. Now when I start the car the pump makes a noise and the fluid in the reservoir is filled with tiny air bubbles. What is the best way to try and work the air out of the system? Should I replace the pump?

Normally you just needs to turn the wheel back and forth a few times to remove all the air. It will work its way out of the system.

Went out and tried turning the wheels from lock to lock probably 25 times and still the power steering fluid is foaming. I checked for leaks and could not find any. Is there anything else I should try before replacing the pump? It took a fairly good wallop in the accident and although it does not look damaged it possibly may be.

Just remember that sometime the "foam" is from air being pulled into the system. Check/replace the o-ring on the pressure hose. Also inspect the hoses and clamps on the return hoses. Pay close attention to the "cooler" part up by the rad, since the font to that hit.

Seal kits for the ps pumps on these is ~$20 and are pretty easy to re-seal yourself.

Totally agree with what poorman said, as usual. It really is easy to rebuild the power steering pump. You just remove the pulley nut(keep in mind it is righty loosey), and then just take it apart and as you remove components you just pull off each old oring and add the new oring. Then put it back together. It's likely the wreck causes a hose to rip or tear somewhere. You might want to just replace all hoses.

OK, Will get a rebuild kit today. As you can see in the picture the pump was into the engine mount. The pully does not appear to be bent though.

Again, just my opinion,,,,the ps pumps on these are pretty hard to kill.

Pull the belt and give the pump a few good spins by hand. If there are no hard spots in the bearing and the pulley still looks "true".....just me but the system is "sucking" air from somewhere to make the sound and the foaming.

Just my two cents, but I've read that you should jack up the car while you do this. It helps to give it a little gas and not try to turn the wheel as much as you can without locking the steering wheel.

I'm looking at just that front hose and it appears to be damaged. It also appears to be really old and brittle. I would suggest simply replacing all your hoses first. That pump might be fine and not need any rebuild. The high pressure hose is especially strong and might be fine, and it's especially a pain to replace so do that last if you have to. Just replace all of the rubber hoses and see what happens.

The front hose did have a hole in it. I replaced it about a month ago.
