Hello all,
bought a car a few months ago ive been trying to restore. Made really good progress so far and have a few small things left. One problem the car has had since i bought it is the right passenger side suspension makes a clunking noise whenever i go over holes/cracks in the road. Sounds like something is loose.
Ive gone through everything back there twice now and can't seem to figure out what it is. The car has unknown coilovers on it, they seem decent quality and have their own top hats.
They look similar to this:
I took the coilover in the back out and cleaned it tightened everything and threw it back in, the sound still occurs.
I checked the LCA/tie rods/end links etc and nothing seems to be loose and all the bushings seem okay.Anything you guys can think of i could check? Im torn whether i should just replace all the coils with a new set and hope that was the issue or bring it to a shop and see if they can figure it out and hope it's not the coilover. I feel like if a new set of Yonaka coils is $650 and a shop ends up charging me 1-2 hours just to figure it out I might be better off just get new coils so i have the peace of mind there new.
Figured id see if there is anything im not thinking of i could check before spending money.
Ah the old "those coils aren't good enough"
(I believe the current coils are actually Function Form Type 1 which im not sure if those are any better)
A) have you had yonaka coils yourself?
B) have you had something else to compare them too? if so what would you then recommend for someone in canada getting railed by our dollar? haha
C) The car was $800, i've put maybe $1500 into it so far on top of that. It's just not worth it to me to spend double on coils when the yonaka are adequate. A friend of mine has the same coils and they ride just fine. I'm not racing the car or anything, just want it low and comfortable.
I booked an appointment at the shop i used to use for my audi, hopefully they can identify the issue.

Well here's some actual diagnosing for you. Have you checked your rear (trailing arm, not the arm the shocks attach to) LCA's bushing? That can make a clunk if the rubber is old, cracked, bad.. etc.. It might not be the coilovers at all.
Yes i checked the LCA bushing etc, however i did not check the trailing arm bushing. I was thinking it could be this after i had put everything back in. It doesn't seem like it's the coilover. Ill check the trailing arm tomorrow i guess!

yeah no problem, glad I could try and help ya with diagnosing it. If it's not the trailing arm bushing, then check the coilover mounts. I know that when my regular mounts were gone, the spring was creaking against the top of that mount causing a sort of noise.. not a clunk but a creaking noise. but a clunk really did sound (to me) like the trailing arm bushing rotting out.

well it's been a couple of days.. what did ya find?
Well the shop seemed to think it was the exhaust hitting the sway bar. they tried to clamp it up better but it didn't fix it. I'm going to bring the car to an exhaust shop to see if they can modify it to fit better. Im going to get under there tonight to see if i can figure out what they were referring too. Everytime i tried to find the noise the car was jacked up and the suspension was not preloaded so maybe that's why i didn't notice.
