Default 95 Civic Coupe EX, Manual - Engine/transmission questions

So I'm about to go and look at a car that has been abandoned, impounded, and being sold off by a city agency. It is this one:

VIN Decoder - Honda-Tech

Now, my first question...and this is the deal maker/breaker...is this the engine that's in that car?

D15B Engine 1992 1995 Civic Delsol 1 6L Engine MT Transmission D16A7 Engine | eBay

The engine is coming out to be put in a minibuggy (the car overall is trashed) and the engines that have that jackshaft won't work...makes my half shafts too short. That D15 in the eBay auction I can mount the tranny output center line and keep my shafts as long as possible.

My next issue will be making sure the thing has compression. I'm not buying the car if I can't crank it...do they have a start relay terminal I can jump to turn the engine over? If it's got decent compression I'll just break the column to unlock it and get it home, but if the engine is locked up or something I don't want to commit to buying through damaging it.

Lastly, just anything you guys can tell me about this engine would be wonderful! I'm fairly new to Honda's cars...I'm more of a motorcycle guy...and I'm absolutely virginal when it comes to Civics.

The stock 95 Civic EX would have a D16Z6 engine.

What's the difference between the A7 and the Z6? So long as it doesn't have that jackshaft going across the back it makes little difference to me.

I do sincerely appreciate the links to those articles...I'm actually reading through most of the D16-related stuff I can find...BUT none of them really tell me with certainty that none of them have that funky jackshaft going across the back.

That's my problem. I'm told that's a B18...not sure...but several of the engines I've seen on eBay seem to have that jackshaft going across the back. Won't work for me. If this '95 EX has that kind of transmission setup, there's no point in me bothering with the car.

How about the typical manual transmission attached to the typical D16? The engine is less a concern to me as it is how the drive shafts attach to the transmission.

Not sure, I had to open the image in a new browser window in order to get it to work in this forum.

The site is having problems with imgur images.

Instead, click this button to upload your pics:

In the picture, are you circling the intermediate shaft used for B-series but not D-series?

That's the problem. I don't know for certain that it's not used on any of the D-series engines. That's what I've been asking.

To my knowledge, Honda D-series transmissions don't use an intermediate shaft. D-series instead use one long driveshaft on the driver side.

B-series use an intermediate shaft combined with a short driveshaft on the driver side.

Perfect, thanks.

Now, does anyone know if I'll have a way of engaging the starter and cranking the engine without having to bust up the steering column?

Do you want to crank and start or only crank?

If there's a way to get it to start then maybe, but I'm worried he'll jack his price up if it turns into a running car. Mostly all I'm concerned about up front is cranking it to make sure it's free and has compression.

After I get it home I'll bust up the column to deal with trying to start it. The buggy will be start button only so I'm too worried about conserving anything there.

To crank, will you use the battery installed in the car or an external battery?

Which ever is more convenient. I would assume the battery in the car (with jumper cables).

To crank the starter, you must supply ground to the starter armature housing and battery voltage both to starter motor terminal B and to starter solenoid terminal S.

Be sure the transmission is in neutral.

bummer. I was hoping for a remote relay where I could just jump the terminals. Oh well...maybe I can get the key cylinder to unlock with a jiggler.

Can the speedometer be calibrated? I'm considering using the factory gauge cluster mostly for the ease of a speedometer, but I'm going to be running 29" tires....nearly a full 6" taller than stock.

I provided a sure-fire method to get the starter to crank because I don't know what you will find under the hood.

I think aftermarket products may be available to calibrate a Civic speedometer. Try a Google search.

I understand, but I'm not sure how accessible the starter is. It would definitely work, it's just getting to it.

The starter sits atop the transmission and is accessible, especially if you remove the air intake system.
