How to test a b16 block?
Hi I'm looking at swapping a b16 into my 92 civic eg. in the craigslist ad the seller said that it needs the rings to be replaced. In the pictures you can see burnt oil which is like brownish black on top of the piston. So my question is how do I check for other things? No head motor already pulled and oil pan tapped.
At that point, you don't. Strip the motor down and give it a full rebuild. Just make sure the sleeves aren't cracked or heavily gouged, which you can do with your eyeballs.
That depends entirely on how you want to do the rebuild. All bearings, seals, rings, and gaskets should be replaced. The cylinders should most definitely be honed at the very least, but also checked for round and possibly bored out, but only a machinist can tell you that after they've inspected the block (and if it needs to be bored out, you need new pistons). A hydrosonic cleaning would be a fan-*******-tastic idea.
well this is my first attempt at building a motor/swap and I don't have the funds to buy a whole since its like 2k plus. would it be worth it to buy the block at 200 dollars? is there anything to look for when I buy it? I figured I should be able to turn the crank freely since there is no head. rust in cylinders but he mentioned garaged with cover over cylinder but ill check anyways. he mentioned the oil pan already tapped.

heres the link for the motor. I'm just looking for some advice. I know it will take time and money which I don't have much of I just wanna a second opinion.

200 for a block and crank, as long as it didn't spin a bearing, is a decent deal. You might want to consider a better motor to start with, though, but that's all up to preference.

What I did when I was putting together my LS/VTEC was to buy several blocks, engines, etc. as cheaply as I could, and take off the parts I needed (one came with ARP studs, took the head off the B16, etc) and then sell everything I didn't need. I ended up with a decent amount of parts to build with and I think they cost me around $300 or $400 for everything. Of course, I then went on to spent a ton in machine shop labor and aftermarket parts, but the idea was sound, lol.
