I'm pretty sure this question gets asked a lot, but I am having trouble finding a thread that has the answers I need. What are somethings I can do mechanically to increase my MPG. I have a 1991 Honda Accord LX with 142,XXX miles.
Things like spark plug changes, new tires, or what ever else yall can think of.
Also, where to purchase the best parts for my vehicle.
Obviously step 1 is to get the car in good working order - tune up items.
Above that, you can get a few % from better (synthetic) oil in the engine and gearbox, low rolling resistance tires, and low draw signal bulbs (LEDs). Don't expect a huge improvement.
For good places to get parts, if you don't need parts fast, Rockauto is tough to beat for selection and prices. They will make you feel cheated by the local parts store. If you need parts fast, Amazon is a surprisingly good place to get parts. You can also get decent prices from Advance Auto if you search for their online coupon codes that can give you 40% off your order.
I have a 1991 Accord Wagon. I was able to improve my mpg by about 3 mpg by replacing everything that had anything to do with fuel efficiency...so I have new iridium plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and distributor. A clean air filter is a must! I have also replaced the O2 sensor (huge gas mileage killer, and does not always throw a code when it is going bad.) Lastly I have cleaned other parts that have an impact on mpg like the EGR ports in the intake, the fast idle air valve, and I adjusted the idle air control valve. I also have tires that take 50 lbs (vice the 36 lbs that stock tires have), and I keep them fully inflated.
