Default POSSIBLE DISCUSSION:idle adjustment

Ok,
2000 HONDA CIVIC D15Z7, DUAL STAGE VTECT, 3 STAGE VTECT (WHATEVER THE **** ITS CALLED)

So the FSM states that the idle MUST be set at 450 +/-50 rpms. After plugging back in the IACV plug and resetting the ecu the Idle should be at 750 +/-50 rpms. I feel thats is too low.

From 1000rpm to the 2nd line nearest to the 0 its right inbetween. The 2nd line from the zero indicates 500rpm. Am I thinking about this the wrong way?
?

Slightly wrong, yes. The OEM cluster is horribly inaccurate to begin with - you should use an external tach to set idle. That being said, below the 1k RPM mark, all bets are completely off. What makes you think 750 is low, though? It's what the FSM states for D and B motors from 92-00.

Yep, use an accurate tach to set the 450 rpm base idle. Then go from there.

So where does 450 ly on the oem gauge cluster? I've been told, pretty old discussion long ago on T-I site, that the 2nd line from the 0 means 500rpm.

And the book says 450 + 50 or -50....

So shoot for right at that 500rpm mark...

450 is base, uncontrolled idle. When you plug in the IACV, it'll go back up to 750.

Why are you resetting the idle+ what's the car doing? Did u change or adjust something that made your idle seem off?

I meant to grab one of these from Princess Auto when they had it on for 19.99 CAD. With the exchange rate, 20 bucks CAD is a pretty good deal right now. To bad I got side tracked with everything going on right now, will have to wait for the next opportunity.

It should come with some reflective tape.

Any suggestions on where the tape should go? Crank doesn't look like theres enough room for a 1/2 inch strip.

If you have power steering you can take the belt off temporarily for the process.

I would clean the spot on the belt grooves you want the tape with some brake clean first and let evaporate so the tape has the best chances of sticking to the grooves.

Damn, didn't think about that. I assume the idle needs to be set with all the utility belts on to be more accurate.

I sort of doubt that being they say +/- 50 RPM.

I doubt the power steering belt when not "turning" the wheel is going to load the engine more than 50 rpm.

I think the real load of the power steering pump is only when you are cranking the steering wheel one way or the other.

I'm hoping the tape will stick on there long enough before getting flung off. I got time now, amazon prime ftmfw.

Clean the contact surface off with rubbing alcohol, and the tape will stay on.

Well, the surface is just where the belt meets the crank, where the splines are.
