Default Speedometer off?

I got a speeding ticket recently and was told I was doing 39 in a 25

I tried to tell the cop there was no way I had to of been speeding. He said my speedometer may be off, and they I might need to get it checked.
I downloaded one of those GPS speedometer apps, and my gauge cluster says I'm doing about 45-47, my phone app says I'm doing about 40.

If there anyway on purpose to make my speedometer off more than what it actually is? Cop said I should get my speedometer calibrated, I took my car to a shop and they said they can put it on a machine and it will show what the car is doing (mph) and the speedometer says (mph) they said I can get it noterized, and the judge may reduce it to a lesser charge.
I've been told if I break the white needle on the cluster then it will throw the speedometer off too.

The car:
96 Honda Civic HX
D16y5, vtec, automatic

The 96-00 Civic speedometer is known to read about 3 mph faster than actual speed. This is the opposite problem you are having.

Are your wheels/tires the sizes recommended by Honda?

Completely stock Civic HX?

Yeah, everything is completely stock!

I have the tire size that the car is recommended for.

39-25=14

47-40=7

14-7=7

So at BEST you were still speeding 7mph over the limit. Not that I like to side with the police, but I very much doubt that you were pulled over for going 7mph over the speed limit. More than likely your GPS 40mph vs. speedo 45-47mph is a bit inflated to help us side with you.

Go to court, plead it down, pay the fine. Stop speeding.

In other words, when the posted speed limit is 25mph drive 20mph and you should be doing 27mph, according to your claim.

So...suck it up, pay the ticket, and stop speeding. It's that simple. If you're firmly planted in thinking that you were going the speed limit, find a calibration station and ask them.

eHMx, it's not linear. If 40 registers as 47, then 25 would register as 29. .851 multiplier in this case (assuming OP's story is true, which...I think I've already made my opinion there clear).

Interesting.

So tagged doing 39mph, speedo would have been reading 33mph.

OP claims to have not been speeding. Speedo reading 25 mph, factor the error as you did, he's actually doing 29mph.

Yeah, the math isn't adding up.

Good luck OP.

Can I just break the needle on my speedometer and throw the calibration off?

Can you not pay your fine or not show up to court?! Can you change your name to Juan and flee to Mexico?!

You were speeding. It's obivious. Take responsibility for your actions and their consequences.

Pay the fine or go to court and plead it down. Then pay the lesser fine. Stop speeding.

My speedo doesn't work. I don't get speeding tickets. No excuses.

And if I were the judge I'd find you guilty of driving a defective vehicle. And speeding.

This site is obligated to promote adherence to all local laws and practices. Your request is trying to push this site into illegal advise and is why your thread is now closed.

A little tidbit that may help reduce your fine (not remove) is as I understand it, car manufacturers are not required to be spot on with the speedometer only the odometer has to be perfect.

I believe their is an allowed 10% variance in what the speedometer reports and what your are doing. Add that to tire size changes and you could be +/- about 7 mph. This is why cops don't pull you over until you hit about 10mph or above.

Either way, you were way over that so you are responsible for your ticket.
