Cutting to the chase, 1997 Honda Civic

when i floor the pedal the car takes quite some time before it actually catches a gear and moves. is this a problem ? certain times it catches on quicker than usual so i presumed it was a problem.

When driving normally around 20-30, pressing on the pedal is suppose to push the car, by push i mean pull you back in your seat alittle.

In the other cases it doesn't do it, it just drives and climbs very slow.

What type of problem is this?

 

What trim/engine?

Last tune up?

CEL codes?

 

Could be as simple as draining and refilling the transmission fluid with fresh Honda automatic transmission fluid. Big neglected item.

Could be some other issue with a sensor that effects engine performance/timing, etc. Any check engine lights, codes?

 

D16Y7, Honda says its a Civic SE. Carfax says DX.

There is no check engine light, as for as CEL codes.

 

Does the CEL work? It should come on for ~2 seconds when you turn the key to ON(II), then turn off. "Not sure" is not a good sign. Give your car a full tune up. NGK spark plugs and wires, OEM (from the dealership, not "OEM type" from a parts store) cap and rotor, and fuel filter. Flush the coolant. If you really want to be an achiever, flush your brake fluid and check your pads, too. Then, more to the point of your symptoms, do a 3x3 drain/fill of your transmission fluid. Do not get it flushed - that'll free **** up from the filters and can wreak havoc on your transmission. Drain, refill with Honda ATF, take a quick trip around town, repeat 2 more times.

Your car will take care of you as long as you take care of it. Don't neglect basic maintenance.

Sevice records when you purchased it?
Stock engine and transmission?

As other's stated do an ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) 3x3 drain and fill.
Bleed/burp coolant. Pull spark plugs, take close up pics and post them.
Test spark quality before replacing any parts.
