I have a 98 honda civic dx with the d16y7, i cant stand how little power it has and i was thinkin about upgrading to a b18b1. i cant find any online and i have no idea how much it will cost for the swap. Do you know what it will cost for the full swap, and if it will be worth it in the end? in the future i may or may not boost it havent decided yet

how many miles on the current engine? Have you made sure it's running correctly? You say you can't stand what little power it has, even the smaller engines have a little pep to them so I'm thinking your D16y7 isn't running 100%. Sure a swap would be sweet. But a B18b1? I'm thinking if money is an issue (which I'm assuming it is since you are asking for swap prices) Make sure that D16y7 is running strong, hell if you boosted the D16y7 it would haul *** and no need for all that swap crap. Have you done a compression test? What other than "it feels slow" can you describe?

It has 197xxx miles and the guy I bought it from ran the **** out of it. I just doesn't have the accel and speed I'm looking for. The o2 is malfunctioning. So it idles weird after it warms up. I have yet to do a compression test but when I got it it had 2 cylinders that misfired (fixed that). But I've had to do so much work on it and the mileage is getting high so I want to swap it. If I wanted to boost the y7 I'd swap in a y8 for the vtec and boost that, which is also an option at this point. I'm just wanna know what the best route for my money is.

For sure, well I'm glad you aren't being unreasonable and weighing out all your options. Boosting the current engine would be a no no with that much abuse. If you are looking at boosting you don't necessarily have to go with the y8 over the y7. I personally would rebuild the Y7, and just boost that (5-8 pounds) if i was on a budget. If you aren't that serious about boosting and want to go n/a I'd recommend a gsr (B18c1) swap especially over a B18b1. All my opinion though GL!

Was thinking about the gsr swap too but money is an issue right now. Been doin some research, I was thinking after I'm done with the build I want to run 12s on th 1/4 mile so I'm just tryin to find the easiest cheapest way to get to my goal.

If your goal is 12 in the 1/4. Boost it or bust. I'm not so sure unless you build that Y7 to take more boost if you'll be able to hit a 12 second 1/4 mile.

Like I said if I'm gonna boost the y7 I'm swapping a y8 in. But as of right now I think I'm going with the y8 and build it to hold about 12psi

yeah, well if money isn't as much of an issue, yeah you can get a Y8. Or honestly save for a GSR then boost it! :D

Boosted gsr sounds like lots of fun, do you know how much hp and tq I can get out of one on say 10-15psi? I'm in between jobs at the moment but if it's worth the wait I can save up for it.

it's really hard to say. I know you don't want to hear that lol, but if it's a used/tired block, it could handle no boost, if it's a super healthy GSR motor all stock internals, 300whp is about the most i would feel comfortable with. Don't worry about pounds of boost as much as your final horsepower goals. Usually you will hear stock sleeves are good for around 300whp, some will say they got more, some will say they got less. All this factors in, so it's hard to just say yes, or no.

If you want to go fast on a budget and you are willing to wait and do it right the first time, I'd start with a nice GSR swap, just worry about either finding a nice healthy block and do it yourself or you could buy the whole swap. The best way is to always tear it down and build it back up if you are handy with tools. If you take the B18c1 block rout, you can take your time and pick the parts slowly you want (better head, pistons, ect), in the meantime keep the Y7 going and maintain it to get you around, unless you have another car. I would def go the GSR route if you are serious about 12 seconds in 1/4 mile!

I appreciate it tho lol, I've yet to do my first Honda build but I've worked on many other cars. I'm excited to get into it. Thank you for your help. I think I'm gonna save for the gsr build. Aiming for around 300whp.
