Default 00 Civic coupe EX 5MT - Timing belt help

Howdy HTers. I recently picked up a 2000 Honda Civic coupe EX 5MT with 181k miles.

Bought it from a gentleman who owned it for about 60k miles. The gentleman he bought it from had a whole binder full of records that was done to the car.

Long story short, it's time for a timing belt because the last time it was done was at 80k miles. Don't plan on keeping this car, but figured I'd still take care of her as the previous owner would with OEM parts.

I have a service manual that came with the car but I couldn't locate what I needed to replace when doing this job. Anyone got a break down of what is needed?

Found a few OEM kits on ebay but they claim to be missing a few things but I'm not sure what I'm looking for to know what is missing and what not. I'm looking to be guided in the right direction.

Also, where would the best place to buy these OEM parts? My local Honda dealer? Online?

Appreciate the help!

I would suggest ordering the parts from an online dealer. Cheaper that way. All that is needed is the belt, tensioner w/ spring, and water pump. Not sure how many miles but you can probably replace the crank and cam seals too.

FYI, before you start ordering OEM parts, consult this thread so you can get the same parts that are the same as OEM...but without the OEM mark-up.

I agree. But since Gates is the OEM manufacturer, it makes more sense to get a Gates timing belt since they are the same. But if you want the Honda logo on the belt, then go for OEM. They're both the same, but some people prefer the Honda logo for peace of mind (even if it is misguided).

The actual timing belt is just............39 bucks....no Honda logo on it.

I am definitely sticking to OEM. This car's life has been maintained with nothing but OEM parts and oil, besides the battery. Figures I would respect the original owners and follow their concept.

I want to replace EVERYTHING, literally. Do I need to only replace the timing belt, or are there any other belts I need to replace? Not too familiar with this because I come from the motorcycle world.

My method, I do it all at once. water pump, tensioner w/spring, cam seal, crank seal and timing belt.

To add yes the utility belts should be replaced as well and properly tensioned.

some sites you can order your parts from because local dealers are the ones who mark up

hondapartsunlimited.com
hondaautomotiveparts.com
hondapartsnow.com

As long as your not shady they can assist, even if a part was missing they quickly send out another. Just don't wait too long to use this privilege.

To add to Tony's list of sites;

Hondapartscheap.com (Honda parts only. No tax outside California)

Oemacuraparts.com (Honda and Acura parts. Use promo code SWOOSH to save half off shipping on orders over $100)

Both great trusted sites with very good service.

If you were keeping the car, a genuine Honda belt, tensioner, spring, front and rear cam seals, front crank seal, water pump, and 2 jugs of coolant would be the ticket. I use bernardiparts.com

But...you're not keeping the car, as you said.

Buy a gates kit and timken seals from rockauto.com. Buy 2 jugs of prestone coolant.

Aftermarket gates belts are NOT necessarily the same as Honda parts, even though they are made by Gates. Because manufacturers are capable of making things 2 (or more) different ways. But I've never really seen a stretched or prematurely broken gates aftermarket belt either.

Gates pumps aren't as good as Honda Genuine. But they'll work fine.

Aftermarket parts end up probably being half price or less, as compared to Honda.

So far I have the following:

- Timing belt
- A/C belt
- Alternator belt
- Power steering belt
- Tensioner w/ spring
- Water pump
- Crank seal (front)
- Cam seal (front and rear)

Am I missing anything else?

Idler pulley?
Valve cover gasket set (valve cover gasket, valve cover bolt grommets, spark plug tube seals)?
Timing belt gasket set?

180k that's it? I seen cars with 300k+ plus miles using non oem parts.

If OP isn't having issues with the belt getting ripped because of a worn idler pulley I'd leave it alone.

Since the water pump IS being replaced I'd suggest replacing the thermostat and drain the coolant from the radiator. Won't have to waste fluids twice if the thermostat fails later on and you'll have fresh honda coolant in that sucker. Just make sure you bleed properly.

It was in reference to what you said in bold bro:

So I do agree. I had to get Preston 50/50 on mine but only because my radiator crapped out by my friend's house and it was on a Saturday night so not like we can wait the next day for the Honda dealer to open

Thanks for the advice on thermostat, I might as well replace that so I don't have to worry about it.

Should I replace the valve cover gasket?

For some reason you wanted to point out the expense of Honda fluids which is why I'll repeat myself, I'm not restricting anybody from purchasing what they want for their car. You can debate the cost all you want. There are options other than walking into the dealership. Its personal preference.

If it's not then leave it? Not sure when it was last done or needed, figured I would do it since I'm already changing all this stuff out.

At this rate, I might as well keep the car!
