Default 2001 accord

I am going to look at a 2001 accord in the morning that is hit pretty hard in the front and will probably buy it. It looks like most of the structural damage is to the core support and will need everything in front of it replaced. The damage is all above the front bumper rebar. The drivers side airbag deployed but not the passenger side. I can pick this car up for $450. It is a 4 cyl. vtech 5 speed car with 180k miles. Just wondering how dependable this year 4cyl.vtech is? I have a 94 accord I have owned for 15 years and it has been a great car but the later model accords I know nothing about. If anyone has any input on this year and model car it would be greatly appreciated. The guy who I am buying it from has service records on the car and has taken very good care of it since he bought it with 110k miles on it. If you can help me with input please post before I go look at the car in the morning. Thanks in advance.

Since the car is a manual...it is just as good as your 5th gen.

Now the body/frame damage done is another story but as far as "reliable" the six gen accord with a manual trans is good.

Thanks, the body damage is no problem. I have 36 years in the paint and body business. If there is no damage to the frame rails I am going to buy the car. I car replace the core support and repair the aprons if they are not to bad. From the pictures I have seen the car looks very repairable.

Honda loves spot welds But, Im no paint and body guy. I did the job youre doing, new core support, bumper...new condenser, radiator, hood and pass side fender. Took me a couple of days, plus since I found a donor car the same color...didn't need any painting...wasn't expensive.

Bought the car today. Having it towed home tomorrow. First thing will be to pull out the core support and see whats behind the radiator.

Holy F that thing is a mess......but I'm not a P&B person. The core support is bent back to the exhaust manifold....but again Paint and body is not my thing.

My hat is off to you for looking at that and going, "I can fix that"

We all have our thing so again my hat is off to you for taking that on.

The only thing that scares me is the left motor mount arm is broken in half and the back of the engine is up against the firewall. You can see in the picture the power steering pump pulley is up against the body side mount. Makes me wonder what the other mounts look like. I hope none of them broke part of the block off. The first thing I am going to do is get the core support pulled off the engine and see what condition the mounts are in. If there are no fatal issues with them I am going to replace them all and concentrate on getting the engine running. To me the body work is easiest challenge I have ahead of me. I've cut two cars in half and welded them back together to make one good one before.

Like I said, your skills when it come to that kind of work are far beyond me.....my hat is off to you sir.

Yes broken mount "tabs" on the engine and or trans would be bad.

You can handle that kind of body work...just let me know if I can help with wiring or engine mechanics....otherwise you are good to go

As far as the airbags are concerned. When I did the repairs, it was on a 98 civic. Both airbags had deployed. I found a donor in the junkyard, same model number srs computer. It had not been in a wreck. Yanked it and both airbags. Installed and had no issues.

Alright, thanks. I knew there had to be some kind of mount back there. I will look for it tomorrow. I've got more pictures to post as soon as I learn how to download them to this laptop I'm using from my camera. My other laptop stopped working so am using my sons. After I cut away the core support and peeled the cooling fans and radiator off the engine and after replacing the alternator and replacing the main fuse I was able to start it up. I only let it run for a second but it started on the first crank. Not bad considering it has not ran since last june when it was in the accident. I will feel much better about it when I get that left mount in place. Thanks again.

Thanks, I posted these pictures earlier but don't know what happened to them. Found the rear mount today, unbolted the transmission side bracket and the engine came right around into place. Was able to get 1 of the 3 bolts back in the rear bracket. It is bent so going to try and find a used one.

Change that front mount, it's just so easy to get to and it is probably wrecked from the amount of tension that was on it. Same with the rear mount.
And inspect that manifold with the cover off. That cast iron can crack pretty easily.

Well done!

Yeah, I already have the front and right side mount. Just need to put them on. I am having a problem with the power steering pump pushing the fluid out of the top of the reservoir. Going to try and refill it and jack the front wheels off the ground and see if I can get the air out of the system. I wish I had the money to buy all the parts I need right now but its going to take about a month to get everything. The cheapest I could find a core support is $120. and that is buying through this shop I do paint & body work for. I have seen them online for around $65.,but I am kind of leery of buying something that cheap.

Finally had some time to spend on the accord the past few days. I got the rest of the old core support cut out and the new one painted and installed. Still need to get a hood and front cover for the car. It is very hard to find those parts for a 01-02 sedan. They had a all you can carry for $59.95 sale at the go pull it here yesterday. I got a radiator, front bumper rebar, power steering pump, rear spoiler, left fender, hood hinges and a hub cap for the honda plus 8 cops for the crown vic. The fender I got was off a 2001 coupe and I found out will not work on a sedan. So I still also need a fender and a couple odds and ends. Once I get a radiator cap and fill it up with coolant and tie the hood down it will be ready for its maiden voyage since the accident.

Was finally able to locate a workable hood and front bumper cover for a 2001-02. Although not in the best shape, I can make them beautiful. Still have to replace the windshield and a/c cooling fan and secure some wires, but at least I can now start to get it ready for paint.ome wires but at least I can now start to get it ready for paint.
