Is 8 gage fine to use when doing my grounds? I have no sub

which ground? 4awg on a thermostat or valve cover is insane. trans/battery, yes.

So just to be clear a 4 on the valve cover and tranny and also a 4 will work on the battery

4 is way too big for the valve cover. 8 or 10 there

Nope. 4awg is plenty until you step up to some serious power/upgraded alternator, etc.
