Default civic 2000 transmisison rebuild

It was ok when the car starts from stop after green light. It will shows a hesitation and a jerk/clunk sound after it slows down below 20 mph and comes up over 20 mph again. it is ok for other speed. the fluid is ok and no leaks and no engine light. no burning and crazy smell.

A couple of months ago it starts the slipping at 20 mph part when it is cold and it is shifting ok for other speed. I am in CA bay area and it is better during hot days or warm noon period.

Right now I am opening up the trans for a rebuild. I notice all valves free movement, spring, filter and clutches all look good. I do not know what to look now.

You might as well do a full rebuild, make sure you have the FSM/Helms manual at your side. Read through it and try not to be hasty in your work. You don't want to pull that automatic back out again.

thanks tony. actually I am using the service manual pdf file from honda for a full rebuild. still do not know why the 20 mph slipping thing comes from. torque converter only happen for slip/jump. I do not have jump problem.

Once it gets close to 20 mph, it will stuck there and rpm goes up. Most of time I let go the gas and let the car slide past 20 mph. people will honk me from behind...

put car on jackstands, front only, and put it in gear to see if it does the same thing

I want to see if the you can accelerate with non resistance, in gear means in D4/D3. Neutral is not a gear btw.

ok got your points. Thanks Tony

but the trans is already apart, I may have to test it after it is back together.

do you know which shift is that when speed goes cross 20 mph? from 2nd to 3rd?

also the shift **** is very tight to put into D4 before I warm the car up.

when the weather is warm, the shift on 20 will be better

You're replacing all the all bearings right? Something else to check for is the internal filter, just replace it. The valve bodies will need to need to be clean and sure the valve pins slide in easily, if not you'll need to clean out the opening.

yes. bearing looks ok and no wear or tear. I do not know I have to replace them or not.

the filter will be replaced for sure along with adding new external filter and cooler. I cleaned all valve body and movement by gravity all look good. the springs are fine also.

any more suggestions?

thx

do you think my torque converter is still good? I heard it may be bad if I have problems driving around 35 mph or above. But I do not have problems on that.

If you're rebuilding the transmission, you should rebuild/replace the torque converter too. They're a combined system. They need to work together.

thanks. the torque converter is welded together and do not know how to rebuild it unless get a new one or cut it open to check.

do I have to touch the torque converter based on my tran's issue at 20 mph?

bad torque converter will cause low stall speed and my stall speed is around 750 to 800. I think it is reasonable.
