Default Manual Transmission Trouble

I have an ’04 Civic with a manual transmission, and for the past month or two it has been giving me difficulties trying to get into reverse. If I put it in reverse and try to back up, the engine will just rev about 50% of the time. When this happens, I have to put it in first, and then go back down into reverse to get it to work. Sometimes I have to do this more than once. It has also popped out of reverse at times. I took it to the Honda dealership to get them to fix it under warranty, but the claimed that this “normal” and that there is nothing to fix.

Is this the case? Is it normal to not be able to get in reverse gear about 50% of the time? Or are they just saying this b/c my warranty expires in 60 miles and they don’t want to fix it for free?

i got 80K on mine and it does this too. some times i'll put it in reverse and when i releace the cutch, it will lightly grind. if i take it out and pull harder on it going back in it works. only once it's poped out.

it also strugles to go into 1st or 2'nd when it's cold. i've found if i back out of the driveway then put it in second and cost down my hill, that must get the oil movin b'c 98% of the time is fine afterwards

i have no idea the mantance history on it. so i'm going to take it in for it's 80K checkup to the dealer.

Isn't it true that the reverse gear has no synchro and that's why it's harder to get into reverse sometimes?

reverse is a straight cut gear, which makes it harder.

With my 05 Civic when i put it into reverse and my car was on a downhill slope, it would slip out of reverse unless i really jammed it into the gear. I told honda and they replace the bushing for my transmission, been great ever since.
