91 hatchback civic trans questions
so my transmission just went out on my 91 civic hatch its a STD 4 speed and i need to know if i buy another trans what do i need to get with it or will my clutch and CV axles mount up to any of the 88-91 models any help is welcome thanks again guys
if you have a d series engine, any D transmission will bolt right up. only difference is input shaft. whatever year the transmission is, thats what year clutch you have to order. only thing to look for is cable vs hydro.
so since i have a 91 4speed manual then i should get a 91 4speed or 5speed right and if i got lucky and got the si 5 speed would everything still be the same

yes, 90-91 have the same input for the clutch disc. 4 spd and 5spd have the same outer case, and same shift linkage. so any 4 or 5 spd transmission from any 90-91 would bolt up with absolutely no extra hassle.
sweet that's good to know now one of my friends said he wrecked his 1996-97 civic and he said i could get the whole transmission do you guys know if that would be a better idea or should i stick with getting the 90-91 trans. im thinking that some of the mounts might be different but idk and i havnt seen one
the mounts are simple, just sometimes a little pricy. the clutch conversion is where it gets tricky. hasport, energy, and innovative all make a bolt-on kit that simply converts the cable bracket to a master cylinder actuator. (which, like the mounts, can be pricy) but yeah, simplest route is stick with an EF trans.

I would aim for a dx 5 speed trans. It'll make driving the car more enjoyable. I absolutely hated everything about my factory 4 speed heap of metal trans.
You could rebuild it yourself with a kit or buy a rebuilt one from these guys. I have never heard any complaints about this company.
On the junk yard purchase just look for a car with an obvious reason for being there. If the body looks ok then it is there for mechanical reasons. Find one that was in an accident then there is a better chance it was running before the accident.
thanks guys i just towed it to my dads shop and im kinda thinking i just burned up the clutch so hopefully that will be it but thanks for everyones input it was very helpful and if it turns out to not be the clutch ill keep you guys posted
so im not sure if i asked this but since the engine is from an 88 and my trans is the stock 91 4speed would that matter since you guys are saying the input shaft is different??
Well when my stock motor did that I got a 88 d15b2 and its been running great since April of this year and my trans has 297k miles on it so I'm headed to the shop now to look at it I'll keep you guys up to date with what I find
The physical trans will fit. Count the splines on both input shafts. You have to match the clutch disc spline count to the input shaft spline count. That would be the only possible difference.
