Hello everyone, I'm new here and naturally as someone who is nervous about a possible issue with their car, I came here for answers. I own a 2000 Honda Civic DX with 160 k miles. Recently, the car chokes if I accelerate too much. I take it on the highway all the time and it doesn't really do it once I'm going but I'm definitely concerned. Does anyone know what this can be or am I going to have to take it somewhere to be diagnosed? I'd obviously like to fix it myself if it's simple. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

ALMOST got everything covered for a good first post, but you missed a few things.
What transmission type?
Does the CEL function, and if so, are there codes?
Provide engine as well (we can all google what engine goes in a 2000 Honda Civic DX but that's not that point)

Sorry about that. It's a 1.6 liter engine. Not vtec. Automatic. No check engine light present and haven't had it checked for other codes yet. I did have a recent issue where the front part of my cat snapped so the car is running a little loud now. I don't think this is related because it started doing this before that. I'm in the process of having that fixed.
You may have had a restricted cat before it "snapped". Now it's a O2 sensor related problem because of an exhaust leak. Get all that fixed and squared away than you will have to reset the ECU and than start reading any Cel codes that come up.

Which brings me to my next question. I know someone who jacked my car and knew the issue with my cat before he even saw it. He said he would put a sleeve on it and weld it for $100 under the table. Is that what would fix this issue with the cat? He definitely sounded like he knew what he was talking about. He has his own welding gun too. When he lifted the car, he showed me the separation of the cat in the front of the car and then put it back together and the loud sound was gone.
thats a ripoff. you can get a new universal cat and have it welded on for a coupe bucks more. as to your hesitation- a more detailed description of the symptoms would be very helpful.
edit: just noticed you've got a dx. a simple weld job should run around 50 bucks. a brand new cat, manifold, and downpipe is $158 on rockauto.com and can be bolted on

I feel like the car has lost some power as well. I can get it to 65 or 70 on the highway but it seems a little tough to get it there. I'm not trying to push her too hard until I get this issue fixed.
So as far as a weld job, would they just get a metal sleeve the bring the whole cat back together?
As far as bolting on, is it that simple with a cat? There is no welding needed if I was to buy a new one? What would be the cheapest and best option for me at this point as far as parts and labor?
Thank you everyone for your help!

So I don't think it's the cat that snapped but the piece after it leading to the front of the car. Or it's the piece after the fat part leading to the front of the car. Should i try to take a pic?
The last tuneup was right before I bought the car from the previous owner last year. I don't own a multimeter but I believe my friend does.
Then it's time for one, anyway. Definitely follow through with the exhaust pictures, but while you're waiting for your brother, go to your local parts store and buy a cap, rotor, plugs, and wires. NGK for all of the above - Hondas get touchy when you give them non-OEM ignition components. If the fuel filter was replaced last year, you can get away without replacing that again until next year. The tune up might even help with the problems you're having, which is why I asked.

Thank you for the advice. I'll definitely get the tuneup done asap. Once again, you have all been a great help. Can't wait for her to be running normal again!
go on rockauto.com, and have a look at their converters. they come with manifold, converter, gaskets, and hardware for $158. Odds are, yours is original, and if it is, look at the area surrounding the oxygen sensor. I'd bet anything there is a crack there, very common with that particular manifold. Your symptoms and description of them are vague at best, so it could be a bunch of different things. NARC led you in the right direction with a basic tuneup, as it is cheap and would rule out a couple different things. Typically, with these symptoms and your generation Civic, the problem lies in the distributor. Do you own a multimeter?
As you can see in the photos, part of the exhaust snapped. My friend said that this is the piece I should get to replace part of the exhaust system: https://www.upsw.com/2000-honda-civic-dx-16l-hatchback-exhaust-resonator-pipe/?gclid=CNyrrJvPoskCFU2RHwodDy8Imw. He said he would install it for $80 for me. Is that the best price I can find for this piece?
