I is tranny murderer (GM Syncromesh review)
Well it's been about 6000kms since the last time I opened up the tranny to fix the 3rd gear grind....
And about a 100kms ago I noticed 3rd was developing a scratch again....
I could feel the weight of my wallet decreasing exponentially as I would likely have to pull the tranny out again.
**** IT.... **** me off...I wandered into GM and was greeted by what looked like David Spade as the parts manager...weird...even acted like him too.... WTF??
Came home and tonite I swapped out my OE tranny fluid for the new GM goodies. My tranny drain plug magnet looked like it was possessed.... I went driving for an hour and noticed that worn 010s really suck in the rain....but overal shifts no matter 1st reverse....5th and everything in between engaged a lot smoother even when I initially ran OE honda fluids in the trans. I would have to BEAT on the tranny before the Honda MTF "loosened" up but the GM just felt slick even with just puttering around driving.
2nd gear high rpm shift to 3rd was smooth.... No grinds... anybody else find that GM seems to be better than Honda MTF?
Seems to be ok for now.... praying it's all that it takes ..... !

So you traded dirty Honda MTF for clean crisp new GM Syncromesh, and you notice that shifting is better? Somehow, I am not surprised.

but based on my experiences with the Honda MTF it didn't even feel this way when it was cold and most importantly when it was NEW.
Sorry I didn't make it clear.....
the fluid is like 3000kms if anything.... when was the last time any of you changed it that frequently?

I've got wicked mad grindage from 2nd to 3rd. Perhaps I'll swap out my honda mtf for some GM junk and see how it likes it
Thanks for the post dude... It's the fizzle

I had bad grindage prior to my last rebuild and no snake oil could fix it..... gave up and pulled the stupid thing.....
Good luck!
i recently purchased a 99 si tranny and the 3rd gear was chip grinding at high rpm then i put gm oil in there and it helped a bit but still does it, what do u think the problem is since u have had past problems with 3rd gear, oh yea when i opened the tranny the syncro looked fine
thanks
thanks
I've run 10w/30 in my tranny and I will never do it again.
I've run redline MTF in my tranny, and I will never do it again.
I've run GM synhromesh in my tranny, and it worked pretty well...
But nothing beats oem Honda MTF in my ITR lsd equipped GSR tranny now.
No grinds, no missed shifts, no scary noises. Imho, Honda oem fluid is the best, and if it's changed regularly (5000-7500km on a raced vehicle) you won't have any issues.

If the actual syncro the teeth look fine....maybe it's the syncro hub... cuz it's suppose to be sprung that could be the issue.
Tranny experts help to correct my guess here!
hypa....GM RULES....for now.....
ive tried em all, dino oil, synthetic, redline mtf, honda mtf, and the gm synchromesh is by far the best imo. don't get me wrong the honda fluid is good too but the gm stuff edges it out a little.
how do i tell if its shot also, can i buy this part individually or do i need to buy the whole syncro package?
Not sure about what Honda US/Canada makes you do....but in Japan you can buy them individually.....
