will Auto ECU pass emissions on a manual car?
I need my civic to pass emissions so the story is the car was sitting for a long time but ran fine before I moved away for work. Car is a 97 civic with a swapped a B20 pretty much stock? Reason I think I need a new ECU is because I keep getting a check engine light for engine coolant temp Sensor. I have changed the sensor I checked the voltage to the sensor 5.5V and the ground back to the ECU is good. I have tried a few different sensors and still get the same thing, and the car runs like ****. this is the only code i get, so before I go out and buy a ecu i need to know if a ECU for an Auto trans would give me more codes?
As far as I can tell, you are OBD2 car and ECU. And also as far as I know, you cannot convert OBD2 from Auto to Manual, that's only doable on OBD1 from what I have seen.
You expect us to tell you about the legality of something, without telling us exactly where you live? Do I really need to explain why that doesn't actually work?
You'll throw a CEL for the automatic ECU, simply because you don't have an automatic transmission. If the CEL being on is an instant fail, then no, you won't pass. Simple as that. Alternatively, you could give us basic required information, and we could try to help you diagnose the sensor.

Illinois. And thanks that's what I needed to known if the auto trams ecu will throw a code.
Now what other info would u need for the sensor? Right now I have a OBD2 manual ECU car is a 1997 civic hatch engine was of a 1998 CRV

Auto ECU will look for trans sensors that aren't there. It will throw a CEL and fail due to that.
The emissions people couldn't give a **** less if the car is converted.

Or the federal government, since the B20 is technically a light truck motor, and is technically federally illegal for swapping into a passenger car.
b20's pass the state ref here now, they've been considered 'very similar' to the b18 and is why they are allowed as a replacement motor since b18's are so hard to find.
Huh, interesting. Still, though, it's federally illegal. Granted, like I've said in the past about "federally illegal" car modifications...if you have a fed looking over your car, you have bigger things to worry about than a car modding ticket.
We have to use all b18 emissions equipment. legally we cannot tune the ecu for the b20 displacement which kind of sucks, but it's only for BAR so w/e. I'm surprised more people don't actually know about this. I found out through honda-tech.
Ive passed before the swap is not the issue. I used an LS ECU but the cel code I get now is the issue if ur Check engine light is on it is an auto fail. So i guess an AUTO ECU is out.
