Icon2 Ok, it has to be a swap.

I've been restling and reasearching the different ways to get more hp. My '90 is original with 168k miles. It could go quite a bit further, and runs really good between 80 and 90 (IH-10 in Texas), where I spend a good bit of time. In stop and go traffic, it's terrible. The engine is burdensome under 4000rpms, and I don't want to floor it, just to keep cars off my ***-end.

This is the conclusion I've come to:

  • Found in:1994–2001 USDM Integra GS-R (DC2)2dr (DB8)4dr
    •
      • Displacement: 1,797 cc (109.7 cu in)
      • Compression: 10.1.:1
      • Bore: 81 mm (3.2 in)
      • Stroke: 87.2 mm (3.4 in)
      • Rod Length: 140.0 mm (5.5 in)
      • Rod/Stroke Ratio: 1.58
      • Power: 170 hp (127 kW) @ 7600 rpm
      • Torque: 128 lb·ft (174 N·m) @ 6200 rpm
      • Redline: 8000 rpm (Fuel Cut-off @ 8100 rpm)
      • Secondary Runners Open @ 6000rpm
      • VTEC Engagement @ 4400rpm
ECU code: P72

Not a ton of HP, but considerably more than mine.

I can get one of these JDMs in obd-1 with LSD trans for about $3000. It should nearly go right into my '90 with the P72 ECU and harnesses.

I'd really appreciate the opinions of some of the guys here that have done this. Will I run into any surprises I don't know about?

Thanks!

...and a clutch cable adapter.

You know that you're getting more power at the higher end RPM not mid right?

What does that have to do with the engine he has now?

And a GSR is Known for mid range power! hence the intake manifold desighn!

A gsr swap will be plenty of power for you in your daily car! as long as you swap the engine in right it will be a a nice engine to have. Espesially since it has a LSD trans! that will make it feel allot more crisp on the street and in turns. You will love it and wont regret it. Next best swap would be a ITR but the GSR is perfect imo its right in between the ITR and CTR b series engine. With some mods which im sure you will end up doing in the future it will free up some HP.

high compression b20 would work, only need to swap the motor, current ecu will work.

I'll look at the other two, if I can find them. I'm under the impression the one I picked is about as far as you can go with obd1. I'd preferr to stay there or my budget goes out the window.

What I've heard about the LSD, is it reduces "torque steer". I'm very in favor of that, especially hitting puddles on Ih-10 at 80....or any speed really.

I did look and was tempted by a type R engine of 210HP, but it was 4k. Too much. Do ya'll have any experience with the JDM market? Do they sell what they say their selling?

Thanks!

I've never liked importers but there's so many shady kids when it comes to selling used Honda parts that it's almost better to buy from a "store". Do you have another vehicle like a new one, a truck maybe?.

Put together a decent B20 VTEC. Use a 99 B20B and throw on a decked B16 head and all the appropriate swap parts. If you do it right you'll have about 1500 into the engine and with a good tune you should be in the 170-190whp range and have a noticeable amount of torque over the 1.8 liters.

Rethinking..., after more research and thought. My current torgue is about the same as the B18C1.

Originally I was looking at the B20, considering turbo, but I don't want to go that far, and I don't like turbo lag. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by a decked B16 head, unless you mean, just go thru it....? What valves, springs, porting?

My first car was a 1990 4 door RS Integra with a 1996 GSR swap. It hauls *** in that car, it'll be more than enough for you, trust me just get a complete GSR swap and be done with it. I didn't even have LSD, so you'll be better off than i was!!!! :D

I can honestly say this is one of the most ignorant comments I've seen on this thread in awhile. I don't think I even need to explain why. OP it seems like you don't have quite enough knowledge to piece together a hybrid setup so I would suggest to either spend some quality time researching all possible options or just get a full GSR swap. I personally like the way the two liter bottom end feels because you don't have to drive as hard to have fun or just swiftly accelerate. If you put a 99-00 B20B ($4-500) source an lsd GSR or B16 trans, and get a dyno tune you should have plenty of whp starting out and it feels so much better on the street. Then you could always slap on a vtec head down the road and pick up another 30whp. It just seems like a very logical setup for you.

Here is a dyno of our B20B stock bottom end with GSR head, flat faced valves and decked a fair amount. Skunk2 ultra street manifold, CT icebox, tri-y header and ITR catback. Notice how the torque curve is flat and starts fairly low. A very simple and cost effective way to make decent power. 195whp, 143tq with a 7500rpm rev limit.

Nice numbers!!!! I like your advice, just keep it simple. I agree based on what meets the OP's needs, either get that B20 or get a complete GSR swap, either way you can't go wrong, both those motors are solid and will be a blast to drive!!!!!

Like I said been there done that(see my build), if you want something with torque and not a kids toy get or use(if you have it) your truck. OP if you want fast and torque a turbo is the only real option all this N/A stuff is just a waste, the 6.7 is what I started with 860+lb-ft for me a turbo Honda won't come close to that ever.

I do understand where you are going with it, you are honestly trying to give good sound advice from your own personal experience. However some people just want a project, and it's not like the guy was asking for the fastest thing in the world, i mean his first option was a GSR swap. Maybe suggesting boostin' his gsr would have been a happy medium between your opinion and his.

Yep, and yes. I've done lots of air-cooled VWs, older '70s Honda and '60s British motorcycles (at a younger age), lots of general mechanics when necessary The trucks I have now rarely need anything. No one works on my vehicles but me. However, as far as piecing different heads on various engines. I've seen that done, but haven't ever tried anything like it.

I do know the differences between torque and hp seen many dyna readouts. My '71 Norton Interstate had beautiful torque/hp readouts.

If I got what I wanted, it would be a mid '90s 911, but I'm building a house with my savings. I'll keep what I've got, and make some minor improvements.

Mine, don't break even at their age. They do everything I want them to. Sorry, but going fast in a truck seems a bit...of a waste. Get a 911 is you really wan'a go fast.

.....way off topic. This tread got so mixed up, I'd just soon delete the whole thing.

I appreciate the straight forward advise though.

I've seen your posts before. And from what you've posted it doesn't seem like you ever finished any of them. We get it, you're into trucks and most of us don't care, and it will never be a sports car even with 8xxtq and whatever HP you have. It just isn't even remotely the same territory. And alot of us don't tune Hondas to make them "fast" because that's relevant anyways. Fun is much much more important. You have fun going slow in a truck and we have fun going slow in a car. I would think if you loved trucks so much and thought building Hondas were such a waste then you wouldn't waste your time posting here anymore. This is supposed to bring people together for a common goal, not sway others just because you no longer like it. End rant.

I didn't finish either of them you're right but I racked up 30,000+ views in 5 months on the last one, not bad for a teenager now I have that 2015 F350. It's a new respectable truck that's the x factor between all of us, truth is that just isn't there with an older Honda/Nissan/VW etc. I have no need to be on a powetstroke forum yet with a new truck so i'm here, i'm not bashing anyones build so calm down.
