Hi guys,

I am going to rebuild my engine. I am wondering where do people usually hook up sling to pull the engine out of the car? I have seen people chain up two points at the intake manifold and two points at the exhaust manifold. What do you think? And I am going to use tie down straps to pull the engine out...I think it should be ok considering the engine is not that heavy...

Also, do you need engine stand to rebuild the engine? Can you do without it?

 

If you are just going to use a sling/straps you can just wrap it around the exhaust manifold and intake manifold - but obviously make sure to avoid all sensors/etc. so that you don't break them off. There's a dozen ways to skin a cat. Heck, my buddy pulls engines from junkyards using seatbelts he cuts out of other cars at the junkyard lol.

You CAN do it without an engine stand but it'll be fairy tedious and annoying. I think you'd get into it and be annoyed you didn't spend the small investment to get a stand. I say that because you'll want to be able to rotate the engine over so you can work on the oil pan/crank side of the block, etc. Look on Craigslist, I picked up an extra engine stand on CL for $10 earlier this year since my other two stands were already occupied when I decided to rebuild my Maxima engine with forged internals.

Worst case scenario use a 20% off coupon and pick one up at Harbor Freight which should be about $40 bucks after the coupon.

I can't imagine doing this again and not having it right there on a stand to be easily moved out of the way, or into better lighting, or rotated upside down, or whatever.

 

I like to use the bracket on the transmission, and a bolt on the intake side. Having engine stand makes it so much easier! Also, I sold my engine hoist and a stand together for $100 on CL.
