Icon7 which d16 block takes a 91 CRX head?

I have a 91 Honda CRX SI scca race car. Need to replace the block, but want to keep the current head. I know I can use any D16 block from a 88-91 CRX, but can I use any of the later non Vtech blocks as well?

Anyone know?

Thanks.

You can use any D16XX SOHC block from 88-00, even VTEC blocks if you're willing to put in a tad bit of effort.

thanks I think what you mean by some work is the oil control piece is in the block in the crx and in the head in VTECs so you have to drive a bit in the block and put the switch in. Anything else?

You'd better check the SCCA rulebook before you go finding random blocks to replace the stock block (assuming you're still racing this car).

You may not be able to source a 'replacement' block without having to move classes.

Todd we are going from ITA to F Production which is a major class and will allow us to compete for a national championship. Production rules are much different than IT rules which must be from 88-91 CRX although I suspect some people might have used Civic SI blocks which is identical.

F Prod lets us use any D 16 block we can make work from Honda, but not Acura.

The following is the rules if you are interested.

Block and Cylinders1. The block can be rebored no more than 1.2mm (.0472in) larger than the maximum dimension given on thespecification line for that make, model, and displacement.A cylinder block from any model from the same manufacturer, which is of the same material and dimensionallyidentical throughout, except for non-critical bosses,is permitted. Oil passages can be re-routed, enlarged, restricted or plugged.

I interpret this very conservatively and perhaps I can use an Acura version of the D16, as some would say it is a brand not a manufacturer, but I intend to stick with Honda.

I would go with a ZC block http://www.hmotorsonline.com/shop/sc...age&item=30023

Or a d16y7 if you plan to just build it on the cheap.

I had a y7 in my CRX, it was nice.

Thanks for the lead Caoboy looks good, no nothing is cheap in SCCA national racing that first motor will run about 8K by the time we are done, but I hope it will have about 155HP at the wheels and that will make it very competitive. We will probably get a motor a year for the first 2 years and then just freshen up each year. We are building what they call a stage 2 motor so the compression is limited to 12.0, but it will run to 8K or a bit higher in we have to beat it, but unlike a stage 1 motor with unlimited compression it will not be a hand grenade. We get to be a lot lighter with the lower compression engine. We go to OBD1 and tune with Hondata to really make it go. We are debating wet sleeving the next motor. Thanks again.
