91 civic hatchback 1.5 engine - cranks won't start
Ok its only 2am and I'm here after searching for more the 5hrs online looking several hrs in the so called repair manuals spending hrs going over thing after thing with this car.. Welcome to my twilight zone. Here is where I am currently at. 1991 Honda civic hatchback 1.5 engine and I do not know the type. Less then 160,000 miles. 4 speed manual. Last week put over 1200 miles on it visiting my wife's mom down in Florida with not a single problem. Drive down to the local dollar store no problem. Car drives and shuts off as normal. No farts no nothing.. Come back out less then 10 mins later and go to start it cranks and cranks and cranks some more. Was hoping it was just the gas guage being retarded long story short nope. Fuel pump works and shy of doing some sort of pressure test it works as it keeps spitting fuel into the intake as the car is attempting to crank and crank and crank some more... Spark is good even cleaned out all sorts of corrosion in the dizzy and went from that lame orange spark to the nice fat white one.. Still nothing continues spark in order. Timing is right all lines up..Wtf am I missing here? Looking stuff up on main relays and from what I have red this ain't it. Was thinking it could be a fault in the ignition but that could not be the case currect? As the ignition would keep it from even cranking over? Ready2burnit is not a reference to cannabis although this car has made.me want to start but o no I'm like wanting to have a Honda civic fire as this car is driving me nuts. Please help any direction?
You're saying it cranks, so we know the battery and starter is good. You checked the spark, and you say you're getting good spark.
An engine needs air, fuel, and spark. You're getting air, because it's cranking fine. You say the spark is good. Reason would suggest that you're missing fuel. Perhaps you should revisit your check of the fuel system.

Thanks all for taking a look. Could I get them to check the code for the ecu at autozone or some local parts place or am I just going to have to take it to the Honda dealership at this moment in time I have no one to help me take it there so I will have to rent a car hauler and will have to pay the 50 for that and will also have to pay anywhere from 60 to $110 for the service of finding out what is wrong .do you think that they will give me a definite answer on what is wrong or will they just be guessing also I'm not sure if this has any hookups to give me any codes or answers as that of which you speak of. also I am sure that it is getting good gas as when it is attempting to crank and crank and crank it is getting more then enough gas.even tried to spray some ether in it while cranking and it wouldn't fart or anything no spitting no sputtering just cranking and cranking and cranking. thanks again for everyone taking the time to try and help me here
No need to go to Autozone to check codes. The ECU is right under the carpet in the passenger footwell. Just pull the carpet up and you will see it. If there are any codes, the ECU will be blinking. Count the number of blinks and that should give you the code. If you have multiple codes, there should be a pause between each code. You can then look online to see what each code means by going to this link: https://honda-tech.com/honda-crx-ef-...ation-1558301/
i would take your upper timing cover off and see if your timing belt is still on and not ripped
a ripped belt would do what your talking about
a ripped belt would do what your talking about
Fortunately, these cars were mechanically simple. A good tech should be able to diagnose the problem rather quickly.

ok current situation is that I have taken off the cover to see the ECU. the Chiltons manual that I have that does not explain where the ECU information is located in the book that I happen to run across from after searching for more than a couple long needed moments does not inform me of what the current initial startup lighting is to be. it simply states that when there are blinks with the codes to follow the further instructions given and by the way thank you for the wink no link one of those talking phones I'm still getting used to this. it simply states in the manual to turn the ignition to the on position and with that being said it lights up one single time and then shuts off so with that being said is the light exposed to stay on or is it exposed to stay off because it says code 0 which I imagine is No light at all says that it is a faulty ECU and that I should check either the connections or have it brought in for inspection so I guess what I am asking now is the light exposed to stay on or is the light going off after one blink normal there are no following blanks blinks not blanks thank you all very much for your time and to the gentleman that asked if the timing belt had slipped or snapped or split can't recall the belt is rather new it looks like it was replaced before I got the car. it also appeared to me that the prior owner had snapped the timing belt and did not shut the car off and somehow destroyed the cylinder head because it is a brand new cylinder head on it with a brand new timing belt. also I imagine that the man that was working on it is somewhat mechanically competent as he runs a mechanic shop but I also understand how that goes sometimes. but judging by the fact that he forgot to put the back cover plate for the timing cover on goes back to the question of competence. on the plus side I am able to see the condition of the belt and I understand that older cars require upkeep and care I also have a 1988 Honda Accord with over 180,000 miles on it and have had very minimal problems from it. even though the Accord had been wrecked very neglected miss cared for beating on it still has not had as many problems as the Civic that has not been wrecked although appears to have been neglected. I have had the Accord for over a year I have had the Civic for a little over 1 month when I purchased the Civic for $1,500 dollars I imagined that something was too good to be true but when I got the car I had to replace the alternator shortly after purchasing the vehicle. I really do enjoy older vehicles I guess I also wanted to mention prior that the night it decided to just give up I had to walk over five miles past 9:30 p.m. with my 5 year old daughter on my back back to the house and the following day after spending more than a couple hours looking at the car and over looking everything it seems that it was very close to driving me mad. I have had many years of experience with many different vehicles this one happens to have me blabbered. again thank you all for your time inside and efforts
Remove fuel hose anywhere in engine bay (at fuel filter, fuel rail, etc) and put end of hose in a clear container. Turn ignition key to ON but don't try starting it. Fuel should rush into the container momentarily, this is the fuel pump priming the system. This will help verify if your fuel pump is actually working.

ok tried by a posting a new thread but not sure if I do not have certain permissions yet or if I'm doing something wrong anyways was wanting to post a thread about ECU's and the possibility of using a variance for it.example I have EECU number 37820-pm9-A01. what other ECU's can I use to replace this ECU.the car is a 1991 honda civic 4 speed manual. thank you all for your time
well finally found out what it was even though I was getting good spark it still had something to do with the distributor. bought a new distributor installed fired right up. have had no problem sense. might even open up a new thread discussing this it's nice to have a happy ending.
