How does the factory alarm security work for 2015 Civics?
Hi Folks,
I am a new Honda owner and this is my first post. I am sure I will enjoy this site/forum as I am sure to become obsessed with my new car!
My name is Cliff, I am in the Los Angeles area.
I just bought a new 2015 Honda Civic LX. This is the first time I have bought a new car, and I am very excited and so far am very happy with the car. I have never had a car newer than 1995, so a lot of new car feature and tech are new to me.
I do have a question:
Would someone be so kind as to explain how the factory security/alarm that comes with the car works and exactly what it does?
I think I understand how the key has a chip that the car recognizes to start the car, but beyond that I don't know what the system is or what it does. There is an unmarked red light in the upper dash by the fuel gage that blinks on-and-off when the car is not running and the doors are locked. I assume that this light is for an alarm system and indicates that the alarm is armed. The owners manual says nothing about any of this.
One thing that is weird is that out of the blue last night the horn went off in an off-and-on pattern until I unlocked and locked the doors with the key remote. I have no idea why this happened!
A rundown of the system, what it does and how it works, so that I can understand my new car, would be very greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much and thanks for having me on this forum

I'm sure if you take your LX to the dealership they'll be happy to explain it to you. I doubt many people are going to go into detail about the workings of the car alarm, seeing as you could be out to steal one, especially since this is your first post and your user name has SoCal in it.
That's cool, I understand. I just wanted to understand it as there is nothing in the manual about it but there is a blinking alarm light on my dash. I'll ask the tech when I bring it in for the 30 inspection that they do at the dealership I bought it from.
Thank you
Thank you
Well there's a lot of people in SoCal. Thanks for the welcome. I guess this is the southern hospitality I keep hearing about, coming from GA. Sorry you've got a problem with Cali, dude. There's a lot of Hondas here.
av911,
thanks for posting the page references. However, that doesn't match with the owners manual that came with my car.
Honda Civic 2015 Owner's Guide:
The Maintenance section goes from page 115 to 134.
Page 116 covers Maintenance Minder, page 126 covers Changing Wiper Blades.
I have read the owner's manual / Owner's Guide cover-to-cover, and it was the first thing that I checked to investigate any info on the alarm. There is zero information in this little blue book about an alarm or security system. The only reason that I know about the ignition key chip code is because I found a youtube vid about it when I searched the internet for info. Maybe Honda took it out for the 2015 Civic LX? What's the blinking red dot on my dash if not an alarm indicator? Oh well. I see that this is a touchy or inappropriate subject to discuss here. Sorry for bringing it up and thanks anyway, no problem. I will ask the tech about it when I bring the car in in 30 days.

Thank you for that link, Dave. Yes, it is covered in the on-line version of the owner's manual. The on-line version is much more comprehensive and complete than the Owner's Guide that came with the car. Everything I wanted to know about it is there. Nothing top secret or how to disarm arm it to steal the car, just what it does and what the owner needs to know to deal with it, which is all I was looking to know. I guess I should have spent more time and looked at that site before posting on a forum for simple info.
Thanks for you help.
Thanks for you help.
Don't feel like you can't post here to ask a question. I understand it's a simple question on how it works but it's something that became a sensitive subject years ago. There were situations that happened that cause a huge number of ppl to have a salty taste when anything alarm/security systems was brought up.
Again don't hesitate to ask a question.
Btw you are welcome

Dave, thank you. I appreciate that. I'm good. Your link to the full manual answered my question and I'm good to go now. I appreciate everyone taking the time to read and respond to my post.
Best regards!

Factory car alarm, don't listen to that immature,un intelligent Socal hatter,I'm from Temecula CA SoCal, ya alarms are very detailed they work with other computers, body control module, your door open sensors, trunk, and key fob, needs computer chip key, you can program your alarm different ways, owners manual or alarm book will explain the different settings,it doesn't work as good as aftermarket alarm if your worried about theft, on my 2000 accord 4 cyl, somebody wired on of my wires to the fuse box on drivers side dash,by left knee in dash area, I'm not sure why possibly I'm thinking they did that to have a key copy without a chip?
