88 CRX Si..D15B Vtec idle/running issues
I have a 1988 Honda CRX Si with a JDM D15B Vtec swap, Manual 5 speed trans, OBD1 converted running on the proper P08 ECU. Motor has roughly 99K miles on it and up until about two weeks ago, I've had zero issues with it. About two weeks ago I was driving along and the CEL came on. Didn't effect the car at all at the time but it came on nonetheless. About 2 days later, I started noticing it was idling funny, it jumped from 1000-1800 rpm. So I cleaned the IACV, but it did little to no good. It has been doing that as well as bogging down and stalling on cold starts and today it started to buck when I took off. The car was converted from OBD0 to OBD1 with a rywire harness (previous owner did the swap) and I did some checking online to try and find out how to get the CEL code since I can't hook a scanner up to it. I found the apparent plug under the hood by the drivers side fender well that I'm supposed to jump with a paperclip or something and the Check Engine light will flash in some sequence and I'm supposed to count the flashes and match that with the respective code. Well, I've had ZERO luck doing this. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or not...I've been told the issue could be anything from a bad IACV or TPS, or MAP sensor as well as a bad distributor
Then today I started messing around with the MAP sensor and it seemed to help the idle but now it wants to bogg down at low rpms and Buck/Jerk some on takeoffs. Does this mean my issue is the MAP sensor? And is there any other way for me to check the CEL code or am I doing something wrong the way I'm trying to do it now? I'm so stumped here idk what to do. I was told to replace what could be a bad P08 ECU and put a P28 with a P08 basemap for the issue as well as performance help. That seems to be the expensive route but I'm willing to do so If it will fix the issue. MAP sensor is only $10 on ebay so I'm gonna grab one so I can cross that off as a possible issue. Does ANYONE have any suggestions here other than changing the IACV or TPS? or has anyone had a similar problem? It just came out of the blue...
