may need a new tranny in my 90 SI hatch<what to get??
well my 3rd gear grinds whenever i get up to a higher rpm and shift,,so i was wondering what kinda tranny should i look into ??
or would it b cheaper to just replace the syncro's???
should i buy a used SI tranny,,or is there a better tranny out there that may b better for my car??maybe make it a lil faster??
my car is basicly a daily driver,,,
,,or could i get a full motor and tranny swap for a lil bit more???
thanks mike

if you buy a used trans.. there is no guarantee that it's not gonna grind just like yours..
I would rebuild yours. then you start off fresh

yeah that **** bothers me...sometimes when im driving and im in 3rd or 4th, and i see a red light and i know i'll stop i'll push down the clutch pedal, and shift into first, but still have the pedal down, and the biotch will grind, so then i've gotta shift down sequentially (4->3->2->1) or come to a complete stop and then shift....whats the deal?
The tranny's don't have a synchro for downshifting into first. Thats why it grinds. You have to wait until you are almost stopped to go into first.

SICIVIC...Downshifting into first is indeed possible but you have to rev match and kick the RPMs WAY too high to make it practicl
As far as the Trani you should replace it with, I hzavent really thought this out but my boy has a 92 Vx Hatch and the thing has mad gearing. I would look into that trani as a possible replacement.
In addition there are only two syncros so im told, one controles 1st, 3rd, and 5th. If you are having problems with 3rd now you will indeed start to experiance grinding with those other gears. 2nd and 4th are controled by the other syncro.

92 VX is a hydro, he needs a cable, stick with your Si trans and rebuild it.
Grinding into third is not just caused by bad syncros, It could be caused by a bent shift fork or even a worn out motor mount. If you do find it to be a bad syncro, IM Mista Bone, he sells them. He can be a great rescorce for your rebuild too. the man is a d-series tranny guru.

Another idea, get a ZC tranny and stick the final drive from the SI tranny into the ZC.
ZC= 3.888
SI= 4.25
This makes for some sick gearing, especially 1-4th gears.

is it hard to match the syncros? i can do it best from 3rd to 4th without using the clutch and no grinding, but if you mess up it hurts
i agree with what the others said...rebuild the tranny (if it is in fact the syncros). this way you know you have a good working tranny.

yo i am going to rebuild my SI tranny i got sitting on my shed... where can i get a rebuild kit for that??? i have been looking and cant find them.... i got my 4 speed tranny and i was wondering of mixing both of them and fixing my Si one... can the parts inside D series tranny are intercheangeable???? i am about to open them and find out anyways, but i wanna know what ill be doing...
I have herd, but not performed( I can't wait to have the chance) that the si's final drive + 5th gear + zc's 1-4 is a very peppy set-up. go ahead and try if you dare but once again I have been wrong in the past. Again I have HERD that thes two transmission cases are the same so go figure.
1st gear does have a synchro, it's reverse which does not. however, you usually need to rev match or else the synchro isn't strong enough to match the mainshaft and countershaft speeds.
http://www.transtarindustries.com/home.asp sells complete rebuild kits for the si tranny, it costs a little over $400 bucks, but it includes all new bearings and all new snychro rings.
the link to my tranny rebuild page is http://www.korossy.org/honda/tranny.html hope it helps.
when a synchro goes bad, it's actually the synchro ring that's worn down. each of the 5 forward gears have their own synchro ring, however, certian gears share synchro hubs (a set of two gears will share one hub). so a worn synchro in one gear won't effect the synchro of another gear.

About using the ZC tranny: I agree with above that the zc 1-4 (or 1-5) with the Si final would be a killer setup. If you use the ZC case, you have to use the equal length axles and half shaft (A good thing, but more expensive)
You can put the ZC 1-4 into the Si case. If you find a ZC trans real cheap to rob the parts from, and your doing a rebuild on the Si anyway, this would be a great way to go.
well,,so the grind may not be the syncros??
how would i check for a bent shift fork???is that in the tranny??
or a warn out motor mount??
hopefully its the one that will cost the least
thanks mike

read through this entire thread, it should help.

how many times must this be said?
the absolute first thing you do, before you start worrying about synchros and rebuilding transmissions, is change your transmission fluid and put in honda mtf. if you haven't done this yet, you need to do it now. don't even bother looking at other stuff until you do this.
never underestimate the power of honda mtf.

i have the zc 1-5 gears and the si final drive. all the gears have good pickup. i think the thing is a monster on the highway...no need to downshift to 4th to pass someone.

What kind of case are you using??
What kind of case are you using??
- XX ZC case (unsure of the year)
- 89 Si case
- 88 Si case
if you use a 90-91 Si case with a ZC diff, it isn't going to fit unless you get a custom differential bearing.
